TIMELINE
SPANISH COLONIAL PERIOD
1542 Spanish explorer Luis de Moscosco de Alvarado mapped the location of "Waco
Village" where the Bosque and Brazos Rivers converge. [Present day Waco]
1690 Mission San Francisco de los Tejas founded in eastern Texas near present-day
Weches (about 22 mi north of Crockett in present day Houston County) when
Spain decided to step up colonization due to threats of French encroachment.
1718 Presidio San Antonio de Béxar founded
1720 Mission San José founded on the banks of the San Antonio river.
1755 Laredo on the Rio Grande River was established in 1755. It became
the county seat of Webb County in 1848 after Texas became a state.

ANGLO COLONIZATION PERIOD
1820 In 1820 there were only three settlements in the province of Texas:
Nacogdoches, San Antonio de Béxar, and La Bahía del Espíritu Santo (Goliad),
small towns with outlying ranches.
Moses Austin arrived in San Antonio de Béxar in December carrying his 1797
Spanish passport and asked for an "empresario contract" to settle 300 Anglo
American families in Texas to cultivate cotton, wheat, sugar cane and corn.
1821 The first of Stephen F. Austin's Colony of 300 Anglo settlers
arrived at the mouth of the Brazos River to settle between the watersheds
of the Brazos and Colorado rivers and as far as the Lavaca River.
SQUATTERS
Some families began moving to the Red River near future Texarkana and across
the Sabine along the old Spanish road leading to Nacogdoches. There they
remained as squatters, some with intentions of joining the Austin colony,
but others engaged in trading with the Indians and Mexicans.
MEXICAN PERIOD
1824 Mexico gains independence from Spain.
REPUBLIC OF TEXAS
SOME SETTLEMENTS
1820's Neches River Basin The Neche Indians, one of the Caddoan-speaking tribes of
the Hasinai confederation, lived along the Neches River in the area of present
Cherokee and Houston counties during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The
Neches for its entire length serves as a boundary stream, forming the county lines
between Van Zandt and Smith, Smith and Henderson, Henderson and Cherokee, Cherokee
and Anderson, Cherokee and Houston, Houston and Angelina, Angelina and Trinity,
Angelina and Polk, Angelina and Tyler, Tyler and Jasper, Jasper and Hardin, Hardin
and Orange, and Orange and Jefferson counties. In 1828 the ratio of Americans to
Mexicans was nearly ten to one. Numerous hand-propelled ferries established along
the river during the 1830s and 1840s helped open the area for settlement.
1824 Victoria was established in 1824 on the Guadalupe River at a site known
earlier as Cypress Grove
1826 Bell's Landing (Columbia) between the Brazos and San Bernard rivers in
west central Brazoria County.
1828 McNeill's Landing (later called Marion, Angelina Co, Texas) near the
Angelina River and thirteen miles from Lufkin. serving as the northernmost
steamboat stop on the Angelina River. From 1855 to about 1882 a regular steamboat
service linked the town with Sabine Pass on the Neches River.
1832 Daniel Parker gains permission to settle in Texas. The Parkers and other
members of their church came to Texas from Crawford County, Illinois in 1833.
Daniel and the majority of his followers settled near the present City of
Elkhart (about 10 mi south of Palestine in present-day Anderson Co.)
1833 Ft Parker established between Mexia & Groesbeck in Limestone Co. Elder John
Parker and three of his sons (Silas, James, and Benjamin) began in December
1833 to clear land and to construct the fort near the Navasota River.
FIGHTING BREAKS OUT
1836 Santa Anna captured by Sam Houston at the battle of San Jacinto
1836 Sam Houston elected first President of the Republic of Texas
Steamboat Navigation
1836 Steamboat river navigation on the Brazos
1838 Steamboat river navigation on the Red River and the Trinity River.
Inexpensive Land
Anglo-Americans were attracted to Hispanic Texas because of inexpensive
land. Undeveloped land in the United States land offices cost $1.25 an
acre for a minimum of 80 acres ($100) payable in specie at the time of
purchase. In Texas each head of a family, male or female, could claim a
headright of 4,605 acres (one league-4,428 acres of grazing land and one
labor-177 acres of irrigable farm land) at a cost of about four cents an
acre ($184) payable in six years.
1843 Rusk County created by the Congress of the Republic of Texas, naming Henderson
as the county seat. Quite a few cotton plantations were located in Rusk County.
1844 Torrey brothers establish an Indian trading post on a high bluff about eight
miles south of WACO. The Chisholm Trail crossed the Brazos here.
STATEHOOD
1846 Texas becomes a state
U.S. WAR WITH MEXICO
1846-1848
U.S. War with Mexico begins as a result of U.S. annexation of Texas.
GREAT CATTLE RANCHES
1853 Richard King purchases 825,000 acres of the Rincon de Santa Gertrudis Spanish
Land Grant on the Texas Coastal Plains and founds the historic King Ranch near
present day Kingsville.
1855 Marion, Texas Steamboat service linked the town with Sabine Pass on the Neches River.
CHISHOLM TRAIL, SHAWNEE TRAIL (TEXAS ROAD) & WESTERN TRAIL
1867-72 More than three million head of cattle were driven up the Chisholm Trail
from Texas to Abilene, Kansas. See also the Shawnee Trail & Western Trail on Map.

NOTE: Think this must be one of those from 1850 Angelina Co, Tx

Moses was on the 1835-1836 Tax List of Scott Co, MS. He

If this is Lydia above, living in Texas in 1860, and she
didn't marry George W till the 1870's, where did she meet
George W...???? does this mean they came to Texas to
visit my Harringtons who lived 2 doors down??? But was
there some other connection before that, since Moses C
apparently came to Texas fairly soon after my Harringtons
moved from Scott Co (1851) to Texas??? What was Moses'
wife Catherine's maiden name????

married Jeremiah B. White 28 Dec 1825 in Lawrence Co, Mississippi &
they were found on the 1830 census of Rankin Co, and on the 1840

sister of this William and that this Hugh White might have been her
son and William's nephew since his age conforms to the time frame for
Jeremiah & Julia's sons.

Groesbeck, Limestone County, Texas
The area was first settled by Elisha Anglin in 1835, when he received part of
the old Spanish land grant of the A. Varela survey. Elisha Anglin was one of
the survivors of the massacre at Ft. Parker, 2 mi west of Groesbeck, on May
19, 1836.
The area that became Limestone County was home to the Tawakoni, or Tehuacana,
and Waco Indians. These were primarily agrarian people friendly to the whites
who settled there. Tehuacana, in northeastern Limestone County, is on an old
Indian village site. Limestone County was part of the Haden Edwards and Robert
Leftwich empresario grants made by the Coahuila and Texas legislature in 1825.

PACKSADDLE MOUNTAIN FIGHT 1873
The Packsaddle Mountain fight occurred on Packsaddle Mountain in Llano County on
August 5, 1873. A band of more than twenty-one Indians, reputedly Apaches, had
come down the South Llano River raiding and stealing horses along Beaver Creek
and Legion Valley. On August 4, James R. Moss collected his two brothers (Stephen
B. and W. B. Moss), as well as E. D. Harrington, Eli Lloyd, Arch Martin, Pink
Ayres, and Robert Brown and followed the Indians for twenty-five miles.

John W. HARRINGTON (Rep of Texas poll list 1846)
NOTE: In 1860 John W. was living in Llano Co, Texas ***
Sometime in the early 1800s she married a Revolutionary War veteran,
Nathaniel Deaver. He died in Randolph County, Illinois, in 1810, leaving
his wife and several children. Arabella moved back to North Carolina,
then to Missouri, Arkansas, and on to Texas. She married John William
Harrington, who was killed in a sawmill accident in Arkansas as they
moved toward Texas. Three children were born of Arabella's second
marriage. She entered Texas in 1826 and made her home at
Washingtononthe Brazos. She received a Mexican land grant on
March 22, 1831. It consisted of one league on New Year's Creek in
what later became Washington County. She is said to have practiced
midwifery, tended the sick, and served meals in her home to support
herself and her younger children. Both of her sons fought in the Texas
revolution. Most of downtown Brenham (about 70mi NW of Houston)is built
on the Arabella Harrington league, for which purpose she sold 100 acres.
She built her home on a hill south of Brenham. She was a charter member of the
Brenham Methodist Church, founded in 1844. She died in 1860.
NOTE: Members of Austin's The Old 300 named New Year's Creek when they
camped on it in Jan 1822.

William HARRINGTON d. July 1826 Washington Co TX ????? See below--update
NOTE: He married 9 Sept 1814 LIVINGSTON CO KY to
Arabella (GRAY) DeVER (widow of Nathaniel DEVER)
The article in the Handbook of Texas says he died in
Arkansas ??? His son's voter registration says they
arrived in Texas in 1825. I don't know which of these
sources is accurate as far as place of death. The
above date of death was provided to me by a
descendant. This will have to be investigated further.
Has anyone got any additional information on this?
