---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- TIMELINE TNGenWeb Reference Maps Early Travel Routes The Natchez Trace - Nashville, Tennessee to Natchez, Mississippi showing some of the "stands" that developed before the 1830's Overland Travel Cumberland Gap & Wilderness Road Many people had come down the Holston River from southwest Virginia. They would enter East Tennessee, then go northwest through the Cumberland gap, follow the Wilderness Road northerly into central Kentucky. At Crow's Station, they would take the Kentucky Road westward. They followed the road turned southward and they would finally arrive in the Cumberland Settlements. The end of the road was French Lick, latter Fort Nashborough (1780), present day Nashville. River Travel There were some who managed to get to French Lick via the river. From East Tennessee, they would float West down the Tennessee River, around the "Big Bend" in today's Alabama, running the rapids at Muscle Shoals, continuing NorthWest to the Ohio River. Spence Page 98--------------- Drury Harrington was born in Chatham County, NC in 1788, came to Tennessee in 1809, and settled near the large spring about one mile north of Little Lot. His wife was Mary Mattocks, of Chatham County, NC, who was born in 1790. He died on August 10, 1844. The children of Drury Harrington were: James (b.c1811) Phillip (b. 1814) who married Martha Wilson, the daughter of Benjamin Wilson Miles (b.c1818) Calvin (b.c1820) Sallie (b.c1824) who married Meredith Gossett of Mill Creek Jane (b.c1825) who married William Malugin Fannie (b.c1831) who married William Worley The late Phillip Harrington was born on March 27, 1814. At the age of 84 (1898)he was still strong and healthy, and lived at the place where his father settled ninety years ago. He remembered when all around Little Lot was a swampy wilderness through which wolves and panthers roamed. He recalled the fact that the first clock he ever heard strike was the property of Hugh McCabe. Drury Harrington's brothers, who came here about 1809, were: Dempsey, Robert, and William. That he was a hale hearty man and witness served with him in camp beginning January 1814 and closing last July of same year, were both in Captain McCray?'s Company, Tennessee Militia under Gen. Doughtery, mustered into the service at Knoxville, Tennessee and marched to Lookout through tract of Georgia and Alabama to Fort Struther and so on to the different parts to attack the Indians and remained in service in that section of Alabama until the expiration of six months. That the country was new, flat and marshy and the troops badly accommodated with camp exposed to no comforts and from exposure said troops were many of them affected in their health and said Patrick Erwin, his acquaintance being amongst the number and in addition to the loss of general health said Patrick Erwin in the line of duty and service aforesaid in crossing a log on march, fell and fractured or greatly injured his ankle so that he was unable to walk or bear weight, thereon said Patrick Erwin fell in crossing a creek in Alabama after the troops were allowed to march home to the town of Knoxville in order to be discharged and war was over. The said Erwin fell on crossing a creek so injuring him as that he was compelled to lie bye and finally put on a horse and in that way reached home. He then resided in said county with said Erwin and knew his decline in health and appearance after his return home to the day of his death. Witness knows that the officers are now all dead. Wayne County was formed 1817 from Hickman County Goodspeed's History of Wayne County, Tennessee 1886 The first settlers of Wayne County were mainly from the older counties of Middle Tennessee and from North and South Carolina. The early settlements were made on North Carolina military grants, occupants' claims and warrants.......Other settlers in different parts of the county before 1820 were Jacob Biffle in the Eight District, where land was entered in 1812; David Carter, assignee of Elizabeth Walker, also in the Eighth District; also William B. Ross, Joseph Denton, Wiley Harrington, Thomas Reeves, J. W. Nunley, T. Gambel, Daniel Cherry, Jacob Fraley, J. R. Russell, John Gibson and J. P. Walker. About two miles below where Clifton now stands, formerly stood Carrollsville, named in honor of Gov. Carroll. This place was founded in 1818 on the lands of Thomas Reeves. The sale of lots began in 1821. At the time Reeves sold his interest to Johnson & Blackburn. Henry Mahon, John Blackburn, Matthew Grimes, Henry Rayburn, Stephen Stubblefield, Jacob Spencer, Malachi Wimberly, Chas. Excerpts from THE GOODSPEED HISTORY OF WILSON COUNTY, TENNESSEE At the close of the Continental war the State of North Carolina made grants of large bodies of land to her soldiers in pay for service in time of battle. The land so granted was situated in Tennessee, then a portion of North Carolina, and it was by the owners of the land that Wilson (then Sumner) County was settled. He was probabaly a descendant of the Archibald Lytle above. Lebanon was founded in 1802. Town lots were sold at public auction on the l6th of August of the same year, among the purchasers being ...M. Stewart, William Crabtree, John Impson...... Early store-keepers were.... Richard Bryan, Elisha Dismukes, Higdon Harrington and David Martin, all of whose stores were located in various portions of the county outside of the county seat. NOTE: There was a Mary HERNDON b. 1731 who married an Elisha DISMUKES. Mary's Mother, Sarah POE was from Chatham Co, NC. A number of her family moved to Logan Co, KY. The above mentioned store-keeper might be a descendant of the elder Elisha DISMUKES. [see also Kentucky page/Logan Co.] The attorney-generals were Thomas Washington, 1810-18... NOTE: Refer to Deeds of Lincoln Co, GA where in 1808 a Louise Harrington deeded to a Drury Harrington any interest she had in the estate of a Thomas Washington. I don't know if this is is the Thomas Washington referenced in that Georgia deed, but thought I would note it anyway. The business men of the sixties were... T.
