Pathagoras, born about 590 B.C. is considered the founder of the science of numbers. For forty years he taught in a school he established at Crotona, a cultural center of that day. His ideas were imparted to his students in secret. No one was allowed to put his teachings into writing. As a consequence much of his teachings were lost. It seems that all of his students complied until after his death.
Pathagoras taught the Science of Numbers, divided into two branches, arithmetic and musical harmony, and the Theory of Magnitude, magnitude in motion or astronomy and geometry. He taught his students the law of mathematics: that the principles of reality were the same as the principles of numbers. The modern system of analysis of names using numbers is founded on his teachings and is called Numerology.
Our modern alphabet has 26 characters which are used to express our thoughts and ideas. Many alphabets have been recorded, dating as far back as 2400 B.C. Although the Egyptians are given credit for originating the alphabet, the use of it was not wide spread. Excavations in the region of Mount Sinai show that the Israelites used a system of alphabet writing. Syria has been given credit as originating the alphabet by some historians. The Phoenicians added many signs and symbols, using the alphabet extensively in their record keeping. They were merchants who sailed far and wide trading with many peoples in their travels. The Phoenicians of course carried their method of record keeping with them. The Greeks added curves, making the alphabet more artistic in appearance. The Romans added capital letters. Each nation added to the alphabet, adding new symbols and making changes until the alphabet became what it is today.
Numbers, thought to be of Arabic origin, were of little value until the idea of "cipher" was introduced. This system created a place value called "decimal."
Most people do not know that the alphabet is a precise mathematical arrangement and association of numbers and letters. Modern Numerology is based on precepts taught by Pythagoras, "that divine law is defined and accurate, and that it can be computed and figured with mathematical precision as definitely as any statement in arithmetic or physics (Juno Jordan, Numerology--the Romance in Your Name,1965)."

The Character is the total self, that which one really is. In illustration I will use my own birth name. It is important to use the full birth name, as the birth name influences the character for life. In the chart below, I have arranged the appropriate number over each letter. The numbers are added across as if there was a plus sign between each one. (3+3+1+ etc.) the total is 70. The rule is to keep adding the numbers comprising the sum together until there is a single digit. Thus I added 7 plus 0 to get the sum of 7. The number seven represents my character.
