The Journey There- Saturday

The time slid past quicker at night, and we were all quite awake when the train finally pulled in at Butterworth train station at 9:50pm (roughly). Our Penang holiday at last begins!

We had wanted to buy train tickets for our return trip- but the office was closed. We then trudged up the metal-decked platform with our loads to get to the ferry pick-up point (which was elevated). Quite a lot of people were already quietly waiting there. We paid our fares (60 cents each) and waited with the rest.

The ferry     The wait wasn't long. What happened next was a bit funny- when we got onto the ferry boat, we didn't know that we were already on the the ferry boat (at least Yaoshan and I didn't). I think we expected some smallish boat, but we were greeted by the sight of this huge deck with lots of seats (I thought it was another holding area... ha ha...). The ferry boat was a medium-sized ship. Maybe I should havet expected it. Or maybe I was tired ;)

The night air was strong and cool. We stood at the helm (as helm as you can get on the passenger platform) and took in the Penang breeze.

Home in Penang     Reaching Penang island, we proceeded to negotiate a taxi to take all 5 of us. The taxi cruised in the cool dark night, taking us to Yingyi's father's apartment without too many hiccups. After a short time of spring cleaning (the apartment hadn't had a tenant for some time), we all took hot showers and went to sleep. After all, tomorrow was Sunday- we had to find a church in the morning.
