Monday, Jul. 29, 2002 Nicholas Blincoe, “The Dope Priest” – great read! Dope smuggler gets caught up in some illegal land trading between Palestinians and Israelis. Not to mention marauding nuns, kosher egg racketeers, the Israeli secret service and problems to buy some decent weed….Funny, but not silly, just absurd enough to be believable. When you feel the urge to read something quirky. You might have noticed, I dumped "Sleeper Spy". I could not get interested. The characters behaved like they were emotiaonally unbalanced teenagers. There was no suspense whatsoever and I dropped out of the story all the time because the main characters went on my nerves so much. Thursday, Jul. 25, 2002 I started to read “Sleeper Spy” by William Safire this morning in the car, I read about 40 pages and it is not gripping my interest at all. I might give it another try, but at the moment it’s more likely I will dump the book. My shelf is starting to look pretty empty…. Tuesday, Jul. 23, 2002 John Saul, “The Unwanted”, well…..let’s say it was not bad. It wasn’t good either. Girl looses mother, moves in with her dad and his new family, doesn’t fit in, starts having strange dreams, evil descends onto the small coastal town. If it was set in Maine, I would have thought Stephen King! But no, not that good. The ending was really lame and for the really long build-up too short. I finished the last page and thought, “What? That was it??” If you enjoy watching B-list horror-movies, this is for you… Saturday, Jul. 20, 2002 Heinrich Mann, “Der Untertan”. Finally read something with a little more substance. One of the important big books of German literature, first published in 1918, but still as valid now as it was then. Everything you ever wanted to know about the cliché of the German male…. Try to imagine a military brass band in the background when reading… Monday, Jul. 08, 2002 Tom Clancy, “The Hunt For Red October” – I love the movie and for once I think I actually liked the movie better than the book. Don’t get me wrong, the book was good, but the movie just had more suspense. And Sean Connery. That settles it. Anyway, the biggest surprise of the book was that it is set after “Patriot Games”, which confused me greatly in the beginning…. Conclusion – watch the movie, it’s more fun….. And I think I will take a break from Tom Clancy for a bit now – at least until he publishes the next Jack Ryan novel….. |
