MIDWEST POLITICS & SOCIOLOGY: by David Gaus WITH Barack Obama's presidency, may come disputes over equal opportunity in education and business--disputes that could prove counterproductive and disruptive. The unfortunate fact is that, for example, neither Indinapolis Public Schools nor the Indiana Pacers are using correct mahematical methods to evaluate people. IPS must evaluate students, while the Pacers must evaluate their players. The current financial downturn is, I think, largely the result of these issues and other, related, issues discussed on this site. Your own job or company might be affected. Your Social Security or Medicare benefits could be affected. Click below for more on this subject: Evaluating People I was one of the few who initially and publicly supported Greg Ballard for Mayor. Ballard's steady, successful 2007 campaign surprised both politicians and media. Having little money, he was unable to surround himself with cynical political "pros." That was an advantage. And it was clear to a majority of voters that Indianapolis was needing change. Mr. Ed Sorensen, formerly of RTV6 in Indianapolis, once called me, “the most dangerous man in America.” And it’s true that, fairly often, I find myself to be in the midst of events that seem to be potentially more consequential than I’d really like. For example, in early 2008 I phoned staffers of Attorney General Steve Carter and Governor Mitch Daniels to say that I couldn’t support the reelection of either of those two public officials. I said that I planned to write about my reasons, and that they were welcome to comment. I also outlined those reasons orally, in general terms, for the staffers I was talking to. Up until that time, it had seemed that Steve Carter was, in fact, planning to run for reelection, but he dropped out of the race shortly after my call. The newspaper stories that then resulted, about his decision, informed me of something I hadn’t known: that Steve's wife was Marilyn Carter, who’d also once been a reporter for RTV6. Since “Carter” is a common name, I hadn’t imagined that connection previously; but it’s relevant to the story that I’ll tell in this article. One or two years earlier I'd unsuccessfully opposed the reelection of Marion County Prosecutor, Carl Brizzi. I'd felt that the issues were similar to those pertaining to Steve Carter's reelection. Mitch Daniels had been an effective governor in many respects. He'd shown himself to be decisive and resoureful. From my perspective he seemed very badly compromised, though, because of this combination: his association with Eli Lilly and his authority over the Indiana mental health system. American freedom and basic values were involved. At stake, too, were the integrity of Indiana’s business, government, and educational proceedings. Was psychiatry to be used as the handy twin tool of business gain and political management? Was that kind of thing to be taught at IU? No Daniels spokesman had responded substantively to our concerns by the time of this writing, despite repeated efforts. Since Daniels won the 2008 election, I was left in 2009 to trying to work with "Dr. Mitch" on the issue. Surely we could share a common goal of making sure that Indiana's pioneering "thought control" program embarasses neither Eli Lilly nor Indiana University. And, progressive as we are in Indiana, we surely also want to be in line with certain UN humanitarian guidelines concerning civil liberties. Perhaps that weightly subject-matter agenda, which seems to have sought me out, as if I were its long-long facther, is what made Mr. Sorensen describe me as "dangerous." Weightly issues seek me out only because they've been abandoned by those in government, industry, and the mass media. And my story is certainly an unusual one. It isn't all bad. The subjects are interesting, and perhps a benevolent Diety is allowing me to atone for the sins of my heedless youth by dealing with weighty issues. But I wouldn't be "dangerous" if the facts presented in the following narrative weren't true. Click to continue this article |
