MIDWEST POLITICS & SOCIOLOGY: IT'S CLEAR TO MANY people that Indianapolis is a city in serious trouble. For that reason I (David Gaus) plan to support Mr. Greg Ballard (Republican) in the coming campaign against Mayor Bart Peterson (Democrat). Some of my concerns, i.e., excessive governmental intrustion, as expressed in the following article, might not seem to be typical Republican causes. However, in the game of politics, the cards are being continually redealt. I therefore respectfully submit the following for the consideration of my friends in both political parties. It's clear that Indiana government in general needs major belt-tightening, and that has traditionally been a Republican issue. Indiana is in danger of experiencing the "hardening of the arteries" that has occurred in eastern states such as New York and New Jersey. The Peterson administration has relied on an economy based on gambling and professional sports--the sort of economy that might seen reasonable to an east coast gangster. Innovation that isn't along those lines is not only not encouraged--it's actively suppressed. That is my story below. And, although my reasons for opposing Mayor Peterson are about matters that I know about because they are affecting me, others are also experiencing harm. For example, a perfectly good apartment building in Irvington was half vacant at the time I began to write this material. It was emptied out following a shooting which occurred there on May 31, 2006 and sent two people to Wishard Hospital. That train of events, which seemed to involve me in some indirect way, could have been prevented. And other apartment buildings in Indianapolis—new buildings, as well as old—may well be threatened with a similar fate. The threat is from a new form of invasive electronic predation, which I’ve experienced and which is described in this article. As will be explained, another aspect of my situation is also likely to affect the future financial well-being of the vast majority of citizens in our state. That will include many government employees. Click to continue this article |
