MANNAZ Oil on Sculptured Board. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Last year Mark and I travelled overseas. We did our own Viking Trail, Mark looking for his ancestral roots and I seeking the energy of the ancient Vikings, whom I have an interest in from a spiritual aspect. I am a Runester, ie: one who is knowledgable in the use of the Runes: the ancient Teutonic Symbols, used two thousand years ago as an Alphabet and system of divination. We visited sites in Denmark, Iceland and New Foundland. The journey re-enforced my respect for the people of those times. They had to have been a very adaptable and hardy race to have survived and progressed in such harsh conditions. We got to view their past first hand, from their skills in boat building, seafaring, metal-working etc... to their form of communal living ....They established the first democracy on a windswept area of Iceland at a place called Thingvellir, where the two plates of the European and American Continents meet. I felt the energy as I stood shivering on this very hostile yet awesomely beautiful place. When we returned I felt the need to pay their Ancient Gods some form of tribute for the priveledge of the journey. This painting symbolises the Rune Mannaz, which represents the concept of Mankind, the individual and his/her place in the world of humanity. The two figures are Ask and Embla, the first humans who were created by Odin and his brothers from two peices of wood, ash and elm. ( Adam and Eve? )
When we landed in Iceland we were at a loss as to how we would get to see the sights, specially after discovering the high cost of organised tours. At the Hostel we met a really cool Finn called Pasi Kivinen. We sat down and worked out a 'plan' between the three of us. We shared the costs of a rental car and drove around at our own pace. It was a real adventure filled with some very special moments. 'Bizarre' is a word that quite aptly descibes our time in Iceland, Pasi's presence made it more than bearable, he helped to make it memorable. Pasi has remained our friend and when he becomes rich he is going to visit us. Cheers Pasi.
