Reiki 1 Manual

students asked Usui if he believed literally in the Bible. Of course, having been a Minister, Dean of the Christian University, and a wholehearted Christian, Usui replied that he did indeed believe in the Bible. The students pointed out to him that it had been recorded that Jesus had said, "You will do as I have done, and even greater things", and that he told the apostles to heal the sick and raise the dead. The students asked, "If this is true, why aren't there many healers in the world today, performing the same acts as Christ". Usui was stunned, and in traditional Japanese style, he was bound by his honor ad Dean to be able to answer the student's questions. It was on that day that Usui resigned from his position at the University and started a long journey to find the answers of the great mystery.

Since most of his teachers had been American Missionaries, and America was predominantly a Christian country, Usui decided to begin his study at the University of Chicago in the theological seminary. However, after a long period of study, in which he did not find his answers, Usui resolved to continue his search elsewhere.

Dr. Usui knew that Buddha had also performed incredible healings, so he returned to Japan to search for information. Since the records of the “how’s and wherefores” of Christ's healings had been lost, perhaps he might find information about Buddha' healings in the Japanese Lotus Sutras. Several Buddhist monasteries were investigated, but at each monastery he was told that the emphasis was now on healing the Spirit, and not on healing the body. Determined to find the answer, Usui continued his search, and eventually he came upon a Zen monastery, where, for the first time Usui was encouraged to continue his quest. The old abbot at the Zen monastery agreed that it must be possible to heal the body as Buddha had done and said that,  "Whatever was possible at one time, can be accomplished again". Usui remained at the monastery and began a long study of the Sutras in Japanese. He also studied Chinese and covered as many of the Chinese Sutras as he could find. Next, Usui decided to study the Tibetan Lotus Sutras, and learned to read Sanskrit. It was around this time, that he made his trip to the Himalayas in northern India.

Upon completing his study of the Tibetan Sutras, Usui felt that he had found the intellectual answers to the healings of Christ, but he still needed the empowerment. The old abbot and Usui meditated on how he could receive the actual empowerment, and they came to the conclusion that Dr. Usui should go to a sacred mountain called Mount Kuri Yama, about 17 miles from Kyoto, and start a 21 day fast and meditation, similar to an American Indian vision quest.

So Usui began his pilgrimage up the mountain. He came to a specific spot facing east, and gathered up a pile of 21 stones that would be his calendar. Each day at dawn, he would through a stone away. Eventually, after 20 days of fasting and meditating he arrived at the predawn on the 21st day. It was the time of the new moon, and it was quite dark when he felt around for his last stone. Up to then, nothing out of the ordinary had occurred. Usui prayed for the answer to come

Out of the sky he saw a flicker of light appear. It began to move very rapidly towards him, and as it came closer it got larger. Usui was frightened, and felt like getting up and running away, but then, he realized that this must be some sort of sign. He had spent so many years of his life trying to find the answers to the questions that the students had asked him, he had struggled, and sought long and hard, he had fasted and meditated, and waited for 21 days for this sign, and now it was upon him. He realized that he couldn't give up. He girded himself for whatever might come, and momentarily the light struck him in the center of his forehead. Usui thought that he had died.

Millions of rainbow-colored bubbles appeared before his eyes. Soon they became white glowing bubbles, each one containing a three-dimensional Sanskrit character in gold. They would appear one by one, just slowly enough for him to register each character. Finally, when it felt complete, Usui was filled with gratitude. Since he had been in a trance-like state, he was surprised when he woke up and it was broad daylight.

The Four Miracles

Usui was so excited, and wanted to share his experience with his old friend the abbot. He started to run down the mountain, he was amazed at how strong and rejuvenated he felt, considering the long fast he had just completed. This was the first "miracle" of the morning.

Suddenly, in his haste, he tripped and stubbed his toe. He instinctively reached down to grab it, and was amazed how, in a few minutes, the bleeding stopped and became completely healed - the second miracle of the morning.

Eventually, he arrived at a typical roadside stand, and proceeded to order a full breakfast. As anyone knows, (who is acquainted with fasting procedures) it is quite dangerous to break a long fast with a large meal. The proprietor could see by Usui's monk's garb and unkempt beard that he had been fasting and meditating and encouraged him to have a special broth instead. Usui declined and ordered the full breakfast, which he ate without a trace of indigestion. This was the third miracle.

As it turned out, the old man's granddaughter who had served Usui was in dire pain with a severe toothache. Her jaw had been swollen for days, but her grandfather was too poor to take her to a dentist in Kyoto. Usui offered his help that she accepted, and he put his hands on the sides of her face. The pain and swelling began to disappear. This was the fourth miracle.

Dr. Usui went back to the monastery, where he found his friend the abbot in great pain with a bout of arthritis. While Usui told his story to the monk, he laid his hands on the arthritic areas, and very quickly the pain disappeared. The old abbot was truly amazed.

The Beggars Quarter of Kyoto

Hoping to heal the beggars so that they could receive new names at the temple, and be reintegrated into society, Usui decided to go and work in The Beggars Quarters of Kyoto. Upon his arrival he set about immediately, healing young and old alike. The results were remarkable, and many received complete healings. However, after about seven years of this work, Usui began to notice familiar faces. One day, Usui asked one of the more familiar faces, "Don't I know you?" The beggar replied, "Why certainly! I'm one of the first people you healed; I received a name, found a job and even married. But I couldn't stand the responsibility. It's much easier to be a beggar." Usui soon found many similar cases, and he wept in despair, where had he gone so wrong? Usui realized that he had failed to teach them responsibility and most of all, gratitude. He then realized that healing of the Spirit is as important as healing the body. He saw that by having given Reiki away, he had further impressed the beggar pattern in them. The importance of energy exchange became clear to him. People needed to give back for what they received or life would be devoid of value.

At this time, Dr. Usui created the five principles of Reiki. He left the beggars Quarters and became a pilgrimage and took Reiki on foot through Japan, carrying a torch, lecturing and teaching throughout Japan. It was also at this time that the purpose of the symbols he had experienced in his vision became clear. He would use them to attune people so that they could take responsibility for their own well being. By helping them amplify their energy, they could take a bigger step toward their own Mastership.

During this time, he met Chujiro Hayashi, a retired naval officer.  Hayashi received his Reiki Master's training from Usui in 1925.  Dr. Usui asked Dr. Hayashi to accept responsibility of preserving Reiki so that it would not be lost as it had been in the past.  Hayashi became Usui's successor, and founded the first Reiki clinic in Tokyo.  The clinic housed patients who stayed there for the duration of their illness.  Treatments were carried out by teams of Reiki healers, who also went to the homes of people who were unable to come to the clinic.

Dr. Mikao Usui died in 1930, having attuned between sixteen and eighteen Masters.

Hawayo Takata was born at dawn on December 24th, 1900, in Hawaii.  Her parents were Japanese immigrants and her father worked in the sugar can fields.  She worked very hard as she was growing up.  She eventually married the bookkeeper of the plantation where she was employed.  His name was Saichi Takata and they had two daughters.  In October 1930, Saichi died at the age of thirty-four leaving Mrs. Takata to raise their two children.

In order to provide for her family she had to work very hard with little rest.  After five years, she developed sever abdominal pain, a lung condition and had a nervous breakdown.  Soon after this, one of her sisters died and it was the responsibility of Hawayo to travel to Japan where her parents had moved to deliver the news.  She also felt that she could receive help for her health in Japan.

She took a steamship and was accompanied by her sister-in-law.  After informing her parents of the death of her sister, she entered a hospital.  It was found that she had a tumor, gallstones and appendicitis.  After resting for several weeks, she was ready for the needed operation.  On the operating table, just before the surgery was to being, Hawayo heard the voice of her husband telling her that the operation was not necessary.  She wondered what he meant.  She got off the operating table and asked to speak to the doctor, who, upon hearing about the voice repeatedly speaking to her, informed Mrs. Takata of the Reiki clinic which was being run by Dr. Hayashi.  This was something that she then decided to try.

At the Reiki clinic, she began to receive treatments.  She had never heard of Reiki before and did not know what it was.  Using their Reiki hands, the practitioners could sense what was wrong with Mrs. Takata.  Their diagnosis was similar to that of the doctor's at the hospital.  This impressed her and gave her confidence in what they were doing.

Two Reiki Practitioners would treat her daily.  The heat from their hands was so strong that she thought they were using some kind of equipment.  She looked around but saw none.  Seeing the large sleeves of the Japanese kimono, one of the practitioners was wearing, she though she had found the location of the equipment.  She grabbed the sleeves but found nothing.  The startled practitioner wanted to know what she was doing and when she explained, he began to laugh.  Then he told her about Reiki and how it worked.  Mrs. Takata received daily treatments and got progressively better.  In four months, she was completely healed in mind, body and spirit.

Takata was understandably impressed with Reiki and decided to learn it herself. Reiki had become a man's domain, and that meant "hands-off" to women. Also, Takata was a foreigner, and at the time, Hayashi did not want Reiki to leave Japan.  Takata was determined though, and did not give up easily, and was finally instructed in both first and Second Degree techniques. Later, Takata returned to the US and began her practice. In 1938, Dr. Hayashi and his daughter came to visit her. Soon after, Takata was initiated as a Master and the Hayashi's returned to Japan.

Dr. Hayashi was a powerful mystic. He could sense that a war was coming and that this involved Reiki perishing and the clinic being closed; he began to make preparations. Mrs. Takata sensed his concern and decided to return to Japan. Dr. Hayashi immediately warned her of the coming trouble. He already knew what the result of the war would be. He knew that Japan would be destroyed and that many of the men would die. He warned Mrs. Takata of the preparations she would need to make in order to protect Reiki.

Not wanting to be drafted to participate in the violence of the coming war, Dr. Hayashi decided to make his transition. One day in the late 1930's, in full ceremonial dress, and amidst friends, Hayashi consciously left his body.

Mrs. Takata stayed for a short time to help with his funeral arrangements, and soon returned to Hawaii, where she fortunately escaped the incarceration of the Japanese-Americans during World War II. In addition, this gutsy little lady pursued the teaching of Reiki in postwar America during the McCarthy era, a very closed-minded period of America's history.

Since the clinic was destroyed, as had been predicted, Takata was the means by which Reiki continued.  She brought it first to Hawaii and then to the United States and finally to Canada and to Europe.  She lived to be eighty years of age, but she always looked decades younger.  She trained hundreds of people in the Reiki healings system.  Mrs. Hawayo Takata died in December of 1980.

Basics of Reiki

Reiki, pronounced RAY-KEY, is a healing system that works with the energy and chakras in the body and auric field.

Everything in the Universe is made of energy.  From the trees and the birds, to mountains, and rivers, men and women, we are all made of energy.  Our bodies are built from protons and neurons… the same protons and neurons as the trees and the animals.  Energy vibrates and gives these protons and neurons life and movement!

We breathe in this energy, we absorb it through our skin and chakras… it flows in and around us.  It emanates from us, radiates, creating the auric field.  In our bodies it flows through meridians and nadi points. Energy keeps us alive, it animates us.

Prana, Ki, Qi, Chi are all words for this energy.  Many of them translate to “air” and “breath”.  We receive energy through the air, and through our breath.

Many bodywork therapies work with this energy.  Acupuncture, touch therapy, yoga, light workers and reflexologists all are trained to make sure that the energy flows freely and smoothly in and around us, for excellent health.

The difference between Reiki and other energy workers is the attunement.   By receiving the attunement, you are able to channel energy through your crown chakra and out of your palms into the client.  You aren’t using your own energy… you become a channel for the Reiki, you allow yourself to become a vessel through which the client draws whatever energies are needed.

What does Reiki actually do?

The auric field stores many things.

People are taught to repress their emotions and painful memories, to keep them all in and put on a brave (and polite) face!   When this happens, the memories and fears stay in the auric field and form blockages.  The auric field contains so many memories.  Recent memories that were suppressed, childhood and even past life memories all have to go somewhere!  They don’t just evaporate and unless you have released them, let them go, they are still stored.  Unless cleared, stale emotions create blockages that work through the aura to finally manifest on the physical plane as illness.

Negative thinking also sits in the auric field.  Fear, anger, and frustration: Unless we deal with the emotions by expressing them they remain with us.  Negative energy attracts negative energy.  As if we need more?

Reiki is a high vibrational, positive energy that works to push out the low vibrational negative energies in the body.  By channeling Reiki into yourself or the client, the energy will move through the meridians and nadi points, the chakras, and various levels of the aura, and start to push the negative energies out of the system.  Sometimes the result of Reiki is immediate… spontaneously the emotion is released and you have a very quick healing.  However, most of the time, more serious illnesses are caused by blockages that have been around for a long time, and more treatments may be needed in order to clear the blockage.

So, Reiki is about channeling energy to remove blockages and ensure the smooth, even, unrestricted flow of Ki through the body

Reiki and Other Energy Work

It has been mentioned that the main (and most obvious) difference between Reiki and other “energetic” healing modalities, is the attunement procedure.  However, since Reiki is about working with Universal Energy, and so is energy work, we must make distinction between the two.

In a nut shell, “energy work” or “psychic healing” is like watching the basic channels on television via aerial.  (Clear if you’re lucky, but normally a little snowy and “scratchy”.    Reiki, on the other hand, is like being connected to digital/satellite television.  The quality of the waves received is much better and purer – the picture and sound are both crystal clear.  Also, digital television has more channels and more functions than “standard television”.  This is the same with Reiki.  Reiki has far more applications and functions than other “normal energy healing sessions”.

Reiki is purer, stronger and more consistent.

People who first become involved with other types of energy work before being introduced to Reiki, will tell you that in comparison to the energy invoked during psychic healing, the Reiki energy feels purer, stronger, more consistent and dependable.  Also, Reiki energy is easier to use, since it has its own intelligence.

For those of you whose introduction to energy work is through Reiki, you will use psychic healing as an supplement to Reiki, but never replacing Reiki.  Reiki energy is the cream of the crop.

Attunement = Instant Healing Capabilities.

Generally people interested in “energy work” will spend many hours, if not years, learning how to use energy for optimum health.  A great deal of work, time, effort and practice is invested in learning how to work with energy, and building up your system to allow sufficient amounts of energy to be channeled in order to have an effective healing session.  It’s a lot of hard work and time on the “energy workers” part.

However, the Reiki First Degree attunement/s have the same effect as all of this hard work.  Instant gratification - instant ability to successfully channel energy.  Of course, the more you use Reiki the stronger it gets, but the beauty of it is that by being willing to be a channel, you are aligned with the energy instantly… unlike the other energy healers who work much much harder to reach the same level of competence in channeling healing.  The attunement process actually prepares your system to immediately handle any amount of energy you wish to channel.  You don’t have to worry about doing the strengthening exercises… you are able to be a completely open vessel through which the energy can flow.

Protection

Other energy healing methods require that you do some serious protection work when working with the Universal Energy.  Of course, it is always recommended that you look after yourself when dealing with other peoples energies.   Other energy workers contend with manifestations of illnesses, headaches, being drained and actually taking on the client’s illnesses (either by intention or accident).  With Reiki, no such reaction occurs.  I have known many psychic healers be tired by energy work, but I have never known Reiki Practitioners be tired, or negatively effected by Reiki.  In fact…, when you give a healing, you receive a healing.

For this reason you can ALWAYS be ready for a Reiki healing.  Normal energy workers find that they cannot help someone if they are tired, ill, have just woken up, whatever.  They have to be in optimum health.  Reiki works anytime, anywhere.

Mindset

Of course, a point worth remembering is the importance of Intention.

Reiki Healers allow themselves to be channels for energy, with the sole INTENTION and UNDERSTANDING that the energy will flow where it is needed most.  We can direct energy, yes.  But ultimately, Reiki will follow the path it chooses, and gives the best healing possible.  All that is needed is INTENTION.   Reiki healers use Intention.

Energy Healers work hard.  They direct the energy.  They scan and beam, direct, make twist and twirl and do many other beautiful (and effect things).  The fact being, Energy Workers use Energy.

Connection to Source

Since the Reiki attunement reconnects you with the Source, you will find that Reiki energy affects you in unimaginable ways compared to regular energy work.  Reiki affects you on all levels, physical, emotional, mental and spiritual.  Reiki brings about awareness and mindfulness.  It is so much more than just “energy work”… it is a willingness to be open to energy for the benefit of all.  Reiki brings about personal growth and stimulation that normal energy work just doesn’t normally include.

Reiki and Energy Work Together.

Reiki alone works beautifully.  Energy work also works wonderfully (though much more effort and time is invested for the same results).  However, this is not a competition!!  Reiki can be combined with many healing methods (energy/holistic and otherwise).  Color healing, sound, aura work, chakra cleansing, crystals, elixirs, body work, and touch therapy can all be incorporated into your healing sessions.  Reiki works well with all other forms of treatment.  Massage therapists can combine Reiki with their normal routine to achieve highly beneficial results.  Reflexologists, aromatherapists,  nurses, holistic physicians, even veterinarians and animal service providers will benefit, as will their clients.  In fact, everyone can benefit from Reiki.

It is an eloquent vision that each modality is like a different musical instrument.  Play all the instruments together, and you can produces healings of “orchestral” beauty and dimension.

The Effects of Reiki Treatments

·        Because Reiki is energy is works on all levels.  Physical, Emotional, Mental and Spiritual.   It is high vibrational and pushes out negative energies from these realms, replacing them with good, positive energy (Reiki).  Of course, positive energies attract positive energies.

·        Of course, because the negative “stuff” is being pushed out, Reiki is excellent in helping you release emotions, and reduces stress.

·        Because Reiki comes from “the Source” it has its own intelligence and flows to where it is most needed.  It works on a causal level.  You may put your hands down intending to heal a headache, but the Reiki will direct itself to the area that most needs the healing, physical, emotional, mental or spiritual.

·        Reiki can be used to treat a wide range of ailments.  Because it balances energies within the body, it speeds up the body’s own healing mechanisms.  You don’t need to be ill to benefit from Reiki.  Reiki brings extraordinary change in peoples lives, especially the attunement process.

·        Reiki increases your intuition, your awareness and mindfulness.  It cleanses and clears the chakras.

Reiki is a wonderful thing to have in your life.  It can never be used for harm.  Each time you give a Reiki treatment, you receive a Reiki treatment because of the energy passing through you first as it is drawn by the client.  It is a truly awesome, beautiful experience that needs to be felt in order to appreciate its effectiveness and simplicity.

Healing Ethics

Reiki is truly wonderful, and often has fantastic results!  It’s very easy to get caught up in the wonder of it all.  It’s very important to remember the following healing ethics.

Complementary medicine, not alternative

Never try to replace the GP.  Encourage your client to continue seeing her doctor and taking her medicines.   A Reiki Practitioner, even a Reiki Master is not qualified to make any diagnosis, or to prescribe any scheduled medication.

While Reiki Practitioners and Masters prefer holistic healing methods, we must never advise a client to discontinue seeing their general medical practitioner, or to stop taking any medication they might be taking.  In fact, it’s quite the opposite.  Reiki is a complementary therapy that works well with all other treatments.

You may suggest that a client adopt a certain therapy or remedy, i.e. flower remedies / light or color therapy or even to change her diet, etc., but always point out that these suggestions are merely suggestions.

If you intuitively or otherwise determine that the client might have a specific problem, it is your responsibility to gently suggest that the client visit her doctor.

Never take credit or responsibility for Reiki.  Never promise healing.

A point to remember is that although you are the channel for the Reiki, the client draws the energy through you.  You do not send the healing.  The healing is drawn.  The client actually "does the work", and heals herself.

You must never take credit or responsibility for any results of a Reiki session, or for Reiki.  For this reason, you cannot and must not ever guarantee a healing.  Many "pseudo" Reiki Practitioners are bringing the name of Reiki down, by promising to heal people who are sick.  Although people have recovered after Reiki treatments, some have not, and for various reasons.

You cannot control the outcome of a Reiki session.

Create a safe space for your client.

As a Reiki Practitioner it is your responsibility to create a "safe space" for your client, and to respect her, and her right to confidentiality.  Don’t forget to explain the procedure to the client before you start.

Attunements

What makes Reiki different from other forms of energy work is the attunement.  As previously mentioned, the attunement makes it possible for you to become a channel or vessel for the energy to pass through.  Remember, as a Reiki practitioner you never use your own energy - you channel pure Reiki from the Source.  A benefit of this is that you don’t pick up other peoples energies and illnesses as can happen with other forms of energy work that can be draining.  Of course, if the person has a contagious disease, make sure you take the necessary precautions.  The Reiki attunement makes it so that you do not use your own energy, but you are still vulnerable to germs, infections and viruses etc.

Attunements should be passed on different days, since the body's capabilities and reactions to the energy intake, vary on a day-to-day basis. Sometimes your chakras, meridians and hara line will expand and absorb a lot of energy, and other times only a little. However, despite how much energy you body absorbs, once you have been attuned, Reiki is with you always.

Long Distance attunements

A Reiki Master must pass the attunement.  Nowadays, you can receive “long distance” attunements that have been organized either by e-mail or telephone.  Personally I think that Reiki is such an important gift to yourself that you should take the time to be attuned, in person with a reputable Reiki Master.  Long Distance Attunement Methods will be included in the Master’s Manual.

Mass attunements V Individual attunements

The attunement involves sitting in a straight-backed chair for a period of 3 minutes to half an hour depending on the Master passing the attunement. Some Masters pass the first and second Degree attunements to many people at the same time, each person sitting in a chair in a long row, while the Mater passes the attunements (mass style, first all the fronts, then all the backs). Other Masters may wish to make a beautiful ritual of the attunement, each student receiving the attunement individually, with soft music, dimmed lights and fragrant incense burning. Either way is right, it is just a matter of personal preference.

Master attunements are deep and special experiences, and should always be performed individually.

What happens during the attunement?

Basically, you’ll sit in the chair with your eyes closed.  This is not so that you can’t see what the Reiki Master is doing, but because this allows you to really experience the attunement process more intensely.  For the first-degree attunement you’ll sit with your feet on the floor and your hands held at chest height in prayer position.  The positions vary slightly for each degree, since each degree’s attunement is working on a different level of your being.

The attunement process will clear and balance your chakras, and Hara line.

Energy Levels in the body will be boosted.  Sacred symbols (which you’ll learn about in Reiki 2 and 3) are contained in “Heavenly” Ki, which flows through your crown chakra into your heart and Earthly Ki will flow through the chakras in your feet, through the Hara line to the heart. Sacred power enters the body and remains there.

The attunement will heal broken DNA strands

The attunement will re-awaken your healing abilities, physically, intuitively, mentally and spiritually.

Psychic channels are cleared and opened.

Negative karma is lifted from the receiver.

The attunement allows student to do visualization of specific deities and guides.

The attunement reconnects you with the Source.

A Reiki guide is assigned to be with you during the first-degree attunement, whose presence you will feel as you utilize the gift of Reiki.  During the second degree you should be given the opportunity to meet your guide.

What you can do to help with the attunement

Just wanting to receive the attunement, and the ability to channel Reiki is enough.  Of course, the more relaxed you are and the more trust you have, the more enjoyable the process will be.    Don’t worry.  The attunement process is a beautiful experience.  Just allow yourself to be open to the process.  The Universe will never send something to you that you cannot handle.  You will move at the pace you want to and that you are comfortable with.

In the days before the course, take some time for yourself.  Question your own expectations of your life, your goals and aspirations. Do you desire more love and fulfillment in your relationships? Would you like to improve your working relations, and work environment? Do you need to target health problems, etc.?  Whatever it may be, whether on a mental, physical, emotional or spiritual level, the energy of the attunements and Reiki sessions during the workshop can introduce positive developments in all aspects important for you.

Avoid any strenuous activities during the workshop time. Permit yourself to be there for yourself. The attunements can trigger deep processes of becoming conscious and it is good to have the time to also work through these processes.  You may come into an intensive contact with yourself - take advantage of this opportunity! You should also avoid alcohol during the seminar time. Alcohol decreases the ability to perceive and consciously experience the changes within you.

Expect everything and nothing! Make yourself free for everything that will happen. Don't subject yourself to any limitations for your growth. Open the door of your consciousness for the wishes concealed deep within your heart to come forward and manifest in your life

Back to the actual attunement process, some students giggle from beginning to end, some become teary, either from an emotional release or purely from relief of what many describe as feeling like “coming home”.  Others see guides, shapes and symbols.  Many see colors.   Some hear messages, or feel the presence of spirit guides.  Many are just relaxed, comforted almost, relieved.  Some feel nothing at all.  Remember that Reiki cannot be used for harm.  The attunement is a great experience.

After the attunement

Of course, the attunement is the easy part.  After you have received the attunement it is necessary to start treating yourself everyday, for at least 21 days.

You will go through a period of detox.  A few days of discomfort.  Perhaps a headache or two, or you might urinate more frequently.  Upset stomachs and aches and pains are all signs that the Reiki energy is moving through your body, clearing the chakras and removing the blockages in your system.

Drink lots of water, do your daily Reiki self-treatment, and be kind to yourself during this time.  It’s a good idea to start a journal and record your dreams and thoughts, as you will find many “inspirations” and new ideas coming to you.  Write about your treatments, what you feel and what you experience.  Write about what you feel, express your emotions and see the subtle (or lightening bolt!)  changes that Reiki will bring about.

You’ll be working so closely with the Source of Reiki, that you’ll find the Universe sending you “gems”.  You’ll find books that become vital to you, or receive guidance from someone that is very important to you.  The Universe will send you what you need, so be sure to keep your eyes open for it, and keep track of it.  Of course, having a journal will show you your progress.  You can be sure that in a few months time you will look back in your journal and be surprised at just how far you have come, and how Reiki has influenced you.

The Three Degrees

Usui Traditional Reiki, also called Usui Reiki Ryoho, is probably the closest to what Hawayo Takata originally brought back from Japan.  It teaches Reiki in three degrees.

Originally though, Reiki wasn’t split into degrees, but was a continuous apprenticeship lasting many years.

First Degree

The first-degree attunement opens up the chakras and Hara line to be able to channel Reiki. The first Degree works on a physical level, opening the body to allow the Practitioner to channel the energy in order for the client to draw the energy as needed.

The student is taught basics about Reiki.  The history, ethics, how it works, the self-treatment as well as the hand positions used to treat others.

The First Degree is similar to the Vase Empowerment of Buddhist initiations.  It cleanses psychic channels and clears karmic obstruction.

From the first Degree you may become a Reiki Practitioner. Being a first degree Reiki Practitioner means that you can heal yourself (this is the most important), your family and your friends, your pets and plants, the environment and the wider community with Reiki.

The First Degree is predominantly the introduction to Reiki and its energies.  Once the student is used to the Reiki energy, they usually move on to the second degree.

Some people complete all three degrees in one weekend.  I believe that the student should allow himself at least 21 days between Reiki 1 and 2.

Second Degree

In the second Degree workshop, the student is given a higher-level attunement and three sacred symbols.  The student is taught how to use the symbols to increase the power of Reiki, psychically protect themselves and others, heal emotional and mental issues, change unwanted habits, send Reiki to others at a distance, send Reiki to heal the past or prepare for the future, and to achieve goals.

The second Degree attunement noticeably enhances your intuition. Your ability to perceive energy is also heightened.

The attunement is similar to the Mystical Empowerment and The Divine Knowledge Empowerment of Buddhist Initiation.  The Hara line expands further to allow more energy to be channeled.  (Much more!), the throat chakra is accentuated to allow the mantras to have effectiveness, the mental body is cleansed, and Ki exercises become more free flowing.

The second Degree works on the mental/emotional levels. The detoxification process therefore acts on the mental/emotional levels. The second Degree Reiki Practitioner discards outmoded emotions and attachments. Even right down to foodstuffs, friends, movies and music... your tastes change. You grow as a person, on all four levels, mentally, physically, emotionally and spiritually. Sound scary? Don't worry, the Universe won't hand you anything that you cannot deal with or are not ready for. In time, you will move forward to the second Degree, and you will be ready for the changes. Remember that you control the impact Reiki can have on your life - and you will choose the level most suited to your life at the time.

Many people do not further the Reiki training beyond Reiki 2.  However, for those of you who decide to follow that route, the 21-day self-treatment must be completed, along with the other exercises supplied in Reiki 2.  Normally a period of 6 months is a satisfactory period between Reiki 2 and 3.

Reiki Mastership

During the third Degree, the student receives the Usui Master attunement that increases the strength of ones Reiki energy, increases the effectiveness of the Reiki second-degree symbols and can be used for healing activities.  The student also receives full teaching information, and receives the symbols that make the attunements of others possible.

Becoming a Reiki Master is a huge responsibility. And should only be contemplated once you have become experienced as a second Degree healer and wish to make healing a part of your life.   Becoming a Master is a huge commitment and should not be taken lightly.  Traditionally, it meant spending many months with your own Master, as you learn by example and assist with the workshops and healing sessions.  However, nowadays you can learn Masters Degree in a much shorter period.  Master Degree courses are usually personalized, and dependant on the student’s level of experience and knowledge.

The Third Degree works on the spiritual level, and the attunement brings about profound experiences in the new Master’s life.  Different levels of perception, new ways of thinking are all part of becoming a Reiki Master.

The attunement is similar to the Absolute Empowerment of the Buddhist Initiations.  It is said to lead to the recognition of true spiritual essence, and direct experience of what was previously “symbolic understanding”

Discussion of Reiki Principles

Just for today, I will live the attitude of gratitude

By having an attitude of gratitude you can, and will, manifest abundance in your life. You are literally what you think. Think thoughts of gratitude and thanks and appreciate what you have, instead of concentrating on what you don't have.

Visualize your abundance in as much detail as possible. Whether it is spiritually, mentally, physically or emotionally, imagine all the good things that you are grateful for, and those things that you will be grateful for one day. Feel the excitement rising at the thought of achieving your goals.

Be grateful for the seemingly negative things too, welcome change and be thankful for the opportunity to grow from experiences, negative or positive.

Be grateful for the mundane things in life. Sometimes life is not a ball of fire. It is not on a high, it is not on a low. Be grateful for the opportunity to just "be".  Meditate and be thankful for all that you have and all that you are.

"We think better, perform better and are healthier when we are happy. Even our physical sense organs work better... eyesight improves immediately when the individual is thinking pleasant thoughts, or visualizing pleasant scenes... memory is greatly improved... the mind is relaxed... our stomach, liver, heart and internal organs work better when we are happy.

The very word "disease" means a state of unhappiness - "dis-ease". A recent survey showed that by and large, optimistic, cheerful businessmen who "looked on the bright side of things", were often more successful than pessimistic businessmen.

"Most people are about as happy as they make up their minds to be," Abraham Lincoln.

"The habit of being happy enables on to be freed, or largely freed from the domination of outward conditions," Robert Louis Stevenson." -1-

Just for today, I will not worry

There is no yesterday. Too many people hang on, unnecessarily, to the past. By hanging onto the past, you cannot live in the present. Realize that whatever mistakes you made in the past have now gone. Look at them as learning experiences. All people and situations are messengers. Look for the lesson and then let it go. Worrying about yesterday is absolutely pointless.

There is also no tomorrow. Go ahead, plan for the future, and when you have made your plans and preparations, trust yourself and your decisions, and bring yourself back to the "now". If you have a problem that needs solving, devote sometime to carefully weighing up the pro's and con's, make your decision as to how to solve the problem, and then sit back and watch life unfold before you. You can plan for tomorrow, but you cannot live for tomorrow. Living is about reactions. How can you react to the future... since it actually doesn't exist?

Worry is a useless, un-constructive emotion, and worry about tomorrow is pointless.

Today is the tomorrow you worried about yesterday. Do not worry about today. Just be. Just exist. Be mindful in all you do. Meditation and mindfulness lead to wisdom and compassion, eliminating worry (and anger).

Trust in the Universe. Trust that everything that happens to you is for your own good.

"Still another type of inappropriate response which causes worry, insecurity and tension, is the bad habit of trying to respond emotionally to something which doesn't exist except in our imaginations. Not satisfied with over responding to actual minor stimuli in the actual environment, many of us create straw men in our imaginations, and emotionally respond to our own mental pictures. In addition to those negatives which actual exist in the environment, we impose our own negatives: this or that may happen; What if such and such happens. When we worry, we form mental pictures - adverse mental pictures of what may exist in the environment, of what may happen. We then respond to these negative pictures as if they were present reality. Remember, your nervous system cannot ell the difference between a real experience and one that is vividly imagined.

Stop scaring yourself to death with your own mental pictures. Stop fighting straw men. Emotionally, respond only what actually is, here and now - and ignore the rest," -1-

Just for today, I will not anger

Anger is purely a symptom of fear, frustration or hurt. Search yourself to uncover the reason for your anger. By understanding the root cause, you can concentrate on dealing within in a positive manner. By acknowledging the reason for your anger, you will easily be able to let it go.

Understand that the people you are with, and the situations you find yourself in, are purely reflections of your own inner self. Learn from the outside what is going on in the inside.

Also understand that people act according to the resources they feel they have at the time. Understand that being angry with people for things they have done, while this is normal and human, forgiveness is far more constructive. Forgiveness means understanding why the person acted badly, that one should not be over sensitive and view all affronts as attacks of our personal nature, but just a reflection of the turmoil going on inside the other person. Forgive, forget, understand and thank the person for being given the opportunity to learn from the experience. Remember; when we fault find with other people, we normally dig up our very own faults.

Anger is a destructive emotion. However, as humans, we all get angry sometimes. Next time, don't feel guilty about being angry, just count to ten, and handle the situation in a more constructive manner. Instead of denying your feelings of anger, postpone the angry reaction. Tell yourself, "in two minutes I will leave the room... not now," or " I will deal with this feeling tomorrow". This is not running away from the problem, this is diffusing the situation, taking out the sting in order to solve a problem creatively... without creating another problem by unleashing anger and striking out. Remember to approach the problem by stating, I feel angry because I am hurt/ frustrated /scared.

Compassion is an antidote for anger. Through Reiki you learn to transform anger into compassion. Doing Reiki on ourselves helps to release the energy of our anger, and replaces it with the energy of compassion. Using Reiki, and being in tune with it, also allows us to feel the effects of anger, worry and sadness, and the subtle effects that these emotions have on the physical body. We begin to feel the destructive nature of these emotions and learn to let go of the mind states quickly. With our increased sensitivity we are able to feel each thought, and ultimately become one with Universal consciousness.

Trust in the Universe. Trust that everything that happens to you is for your own good.

All types of physical exercise are excellent for the draining of aggression. Go for a walk, go to the gym, play a game of squash, wash the windows. Put that energy into something creative and constructive.

Instead of denying your feelings of anger, postpone the angry reaction.  Tell yourself, "in two minutes I will leave the room… not just now," or, "I will deal with this feeling tomorrow".  This is not running away from the problem, this is diffusing the situation, taking out the sting in order to solve a problem creatively… without creating another problem by venting anger.

Write a letter to the person who has frustrated, hurt or angered you.

Pull out all the stops and leave nothing to the imagination. "Listen to your inner child", express yourself.

Tell the person exactly what you think of them, in no uncertain terms.

Then burn the letter.

Just for today, I will do my work honestly

About being honest...

Be honest about all that you do during the day. Be honest to yourself. Don't react or talk out of habit, out of programmed responses. Be honest. Speak honestly. React honestly.

Wake up! Humans walk around, almost in a hypnotized state, reacting to situations and people purely out of habit. People are conditioned to act and speak in a certain way. We are conditioned to be something that is not our true nature.

We all do this. We react a certain way, with a certain friend, and then another way with the boss, and then another way with our parents.

Learn to enjoy each moment. To savor each experience. Live your life with mindfulness. Truly enjoy whatever you are doing, be it walking, reading, housework, etc. For example, if you are doing the dishes, feel the warm soapy water, listen to the sound of the knives and forks clanging against the plates, smell the fresh-scented detergent, delight in the white rainbow tinged soap bubbles. Enjoy each sensation.

Being mindful (watching the mind) is the way to develop wisdom and insight and to see the true nature of everything.

"Only when we are honest with ourselves, can we see where we are going wrong, and re-direct the course we are on." -1-

About work...

"Environments dictate consciousness. We cannot separate the purpose of our livelihood from the space we occupy while fulfilling that purpose. Your quest concerning how to occupy your office, is actually a powerful process of self-discovery, one that asks such questions as "What is the value of my work in the world at large?" When questioning the worth of your work, you should feel you are involved in "right livelihood". "Right livelihood" means that your work is valuable and makes a positive difference in the lives of others. It isn't the specific type of work that you do that makes it "right livelihood", but the context in which you hold what you do. Any job can be right livelihood if that is the way you view it and if you operate within that context... It is important to see your job in the greater context of the world at large. You must find value within your job. If you are unhappy in your job but feel that you have no alternative, find some value in what you do, so that you are not poisoning your spirit. You must know that your job can make a contribution to the world...

Take a moment to still your mind ask yourself these questions:

What is the value of my work in the world at large?

What do I hope to gain personally from this work?

What am I gaining spiritually by being in this job?

Why am I working in this job?

What work would I do if I didn't need a salary?

What is my long-term intention for myself in this job?

Answering these questions can help you understand the purpose of your job in your life." -2-

Just for today, I will show love and respect for every living being.

Have respect and love for yourself, and see how it affects the attitudes and behaviors of the people around you. In turn, show love and respect for others, for every living be-ing, not just human, but plants and animals too. In fact, all creatures of all natures, be it animal, plant, mineral, whatever... we are all important, and all part of this great Universe that we share. Without each other we will not survive. Without love and respect, we will never move forward, but will continue to destroy the world as it is being destroyed now. We all deserve love and respect.

Remember that our life's circumstances are reflections of our inner emotions. Allow your light to shine on those around you, and feel its glow as it radiates back onto your own skin.

Show love and kindness in all you do. Good emotions carry higher vibrations than negative emotions. It's like the age-old adage that "good will always defeat evil". It is time for each person on the planet to lift their own vibrations, showing the goodness in our hearts, lets lift the earth's vibrations and heal Mother Earth.

"Imagine that Spirit can be likened to a giant luminous mirror-ball in the heavens. Shafts of light radiate in all directions from the mirror-ball's individual mirrors, creating reflections throughout time and space. Now imagine that each person on earth identifies with an individual reflection to the extent that they feel that they are that reflection. They look around and see other reflections, but of course, all the reflections seem separated by time and space. However, if those individuals were to expand their perception they would eventually recognize that all reflections emanate from the same source. We are truly One. We are not separate. We are the reflection and we are the Source of our reflection. We are One." -2-

How to Hold the Hands

The hands are held palms down, fingers and thumbs extended and held together. In this way, the hands are placed on the body, not exerting any pressure.

If it is not possible to touch the client (either because of pains, as in the case of burn patients, or because of personal preference (some people just don't like being touched), you can hold your hands just above the skin, this is just as effective.

Put you hands down with the intention of healing, and the energy will start to flow. Don't try to control it because it is not your energy, you are only the channel. It knows, by its own independent nature what is needed, where and how much is needed. The client will draw the energy from you.

Being in an altered state is not a pre-requisite, but it is necessary to focus on the intent of healing.

Remember that the more Reiki is used, the more powerful it gets.

Energy released and received is perceived differently by everyone, and can change with each position. You may experience heat, tingling, "buzzing", vibrating, a magnetic pulling sensation, coolness, etc. The sensations are many and varied and are different for each person. Use your intuition to discover what each sensation means for you.

Take note of any thoughts, colors, feelings and body sensations that you may experience during the treatment. Again, use your intuition as to the relevance of these experiences. Generally, the Reiki healer seldom encourages conversation, especially during the head positions.

Again, to make it clear, what actually happens during a Reiki treatment is that high vibrational, positive energy literally pushes out the lower vibrational, negative energies. This cleansing process rids the client of past-life issues, traumas and illnesses. However, it is not a miracle cure, the negative remembrances do not just disappear, they are brought to the surface in order for the client to acknowledge and then let go of them. Be prepared for this emotional outburst, tears or anger, during treatments. During such an occasion, just hold your position a little longer until the client has settled down again.

Since Reiki speeds up the healing process, NEVER send Reiki to:

Someone under anesthetic - you might wake them up or interfere with the doctors procedure, or

Broken bones - you might set the bone in the wrong position - let the bone be set in the correct healing position first, and then send Reiki

Self Treatment

Following the attunements, it is vital that you give yourself a full treatment everyday, for at least 21 days.  This gets the Reiki flowing through your body, and through your life.  Don't say that there is not enough time… make time!  You can only reap the full benefits of Reiki if you are prepared to work it.

Remember to hold the positions for at least 3 minutes, unless you intuit differently.  Always trust your intuition.

I have included sample affirmations, please note that these affirmations are not necessary, but are highly beneficial anyway.

Always slide the hands from position to position.  Remember to move with love, to love yourself as you move through these positions.

FOCUS ON THE INTENTION OF HEALING AND THE REIKI WILL FLOW.

1                    Place your palms over your eyes.

" I see the world clearly for its beauty and its truth.  I see myself clearly for my beauty and my truth.  So be it."

"I have the ability to see things for what they are.  I have the ability to perceive and intuit easily, the way things should be.  So be it."

2                    Slide your hands up to cradle your head, balancing each side of the brain.  Keep the crown area OPEN.

"I hear and listen to my own inner knowing clearly.  I hear and listen to what others are saying.  In doing so, I achieve balance and harmony in my life.  So be it."

3                    Move your hands to the back of your head, holding the occipital lobes, and covering the back of the third eye.

"I align myself with my highest intention.  All connection with my highest truth is safe and easy.  So be it."

4                    Cup your jaw in your hands - fingers reaching up to your ears.

"I communicate with clarity and with truth, that which is meant to be said.  I have the ability to express myself simply and with truth.  By doing so, I am also able to express my needs to the Universe clearly.  So be it."

5                    One hand on throat, the other just above the thymus area.  The covers the throat, the thymus and the thyroid glands. Tap thyroid 21 times for increased immunization.

6                    Both hands at the heart area.

"I feel love entering my life.  I allow people to love me and I allow myself to love people, animals and the planet - unconditionally.  I value myself and forgive myself for any past mistakes.  I love myself for who I am and where I am going to at this precise moment.  So be it."

9a        Both hands at naval area

10a      Both hands at lower stomach

"I am a creative human being, with creative potential.  Each day I will seek new ways to creatively live my life.  I am also proud to be a man/woman.  By that I mean that I am proud of my sexuality and the relationships that I chose in my life.  I am fire and I am energy that is constantly changing."  So be it.

11a      Upper back/shoulders

12a      Mid-back (lungs)

13a      Center of the back (kidneys)

ADDITIONAL POSITIONS

Over knees

"I allow myself to release all anger that has built up over the years in my life.  I release past issues and forgive all involved - including myself.  By releasing fear, and anger, I become a lot more flexible and a lot more tolerant of all - including myself.  So be it."

Over heels

Over ankles

Over feet

"I walk with pride, courage and determination while on this Earth school journey.  My feet are placed firmly on the ground, so that I can experience this lifetime as holistically as possible.  My feet placed firmly on the ground also keep me in present time and connected with the energy on the Earth.  So be it."

Rest for a while and drink glass of water (preferably room temperature).

While the energy is still flowing through you, send Reiki to Mother Earth.  You can do this through the soles of your feet, which is also a good way of grounding yourself after a treatment.

Direct Healing/Form Treatment/The Foundation (One of several approaches)

1          The hand positions for treating another person are exactly the same as treating yourself, except for observing privacy restrictions.

2          There are various ways, and many different procedures for treating clients.  Remember to use your intuition and have intention whilst healing.

3          Wash your hands, and instruct your client to empty their bowels.  You don't want them getting up half way through the treatment because they need to use the toilet.

4                    Discuss the procedure with the client before you start, as mentioned in the Reiki ethics part of the manual.  Answer any questions the client may have.

Explaining the procedure to the client.

Always explain, before the treatment, the procedure.  That she will remain clothed, and lay on the Reiki bed, under the blanket.  You will start on her front (whilst she lies on her back). You will place your hands on her body, starting at the head and working downwards.  Tell her that when it comes to the position where you need to place your hands at the back of the head, she must not lift her head, but must relax as you maneuver her into the position you require.  Tell her that half way through the treatment you may ask her to turn on to her stomach, or you may decide to only work on her front side.

It is also important that you explain that she will have a tissue placed over her eyes.  This is not to hide anything from her, but to allow her privacy, avoid your palms from touching her eyes, for hygiene reasons, comfort reasons, and "so as not to smudge make-up" reasons.

Inform your client that it is quite okay for her to fall asleep during the treatment, and that this is quite normal.  She mustn't worry about changing position in order to be comfortable, it will not interfere with the treatment since you will adapt the hand movements to suit her sleeping position.  Whether she is asleep or awake, laying in the traditional position or laying in another comfortable way, Reiki will flow to the places where it is needed.   While she is sleeping, she may have strange dreams, or remembrances of past life experiences.  This is merely the high vibrational energy of Reiki, pushing out the slow negative energy of memories and things that are stored, not only in the body, but also in various levels of the aura.

Also, that this is a safe space, and if she needs to release any emotions during the treatment, she can, and it will not go beyond the room.

She also needs to know that at the end of the procedure, she must lie quietly and mustn't rush to get up and about.  She must wait quietly while you bring her a glass of water, which she has to drink.

5                    Place the tissue over the clients face; ask her to keep herself open to the healing energies of Reiki.

6                    Cover the client with a light blanket.  The blanket makes the person feel more secure and comfortable and will not interfere with the Reiki channeling process.

7                    Center yourself.  Remind yourself that you are being used as a channel for healing energy.  Be thankful to those who taught you, and those who taught them.

8          Say a silent prayer, such as the one on the front page of the manual, and invite your Reiki guides to assist you with your healing (if you have met them).  Call upon all ascended Masters, and Masters yet to be, to be there.

9          Begin the standard treatment.

10        At the end of the treatment, brush the aura.

Front:   Up from the feet, to the torso 3 times.

From the hands, up the arms, down the torso, 3 times

            Around the head 3 times.

Remember to "shake off" the residue or hold it up to the light for cleansing.

Back    Form a V with your index and middle fingers of the right hand, place your left hand over your thigh for support.  Pull down from top of back to coccyx 5 times.  Stroke down as for front.  (Where diabetes is present, brush up the torso, not down)

It’s a wonderful way to end your treatment.  The person being treated will generally experience wonderful tingling feeling throughout.

11        Wash your hands.

12                Remind yourself that you were used as a channel for healing energy.

13                Allow the client to rest for a while.  Fetch a glass of water (preferably room temperature) that she must slowly sip.

STANDARD TREATMENT

STANDING AT THE CLIENT'S HEAD

1                    Hands over the clients face (which is by now should have a tissue over it).  Your thumbs resting on the forehead, and fingers resting lightly on the cheeks.  Do not exert any pressure on the eyes.

2                    Pull your hands back towards you.  The index fingers touching the temples, the thumbs touching the hairline at the forehead.  The right hand holding the right side of the head, the left hand holding the left side of the head.

3                    Slide the hands under the client's head, so that you are cradling the occipital lobes.

4                    Slide hands forwards to cup client's jaw.

5                    Bring one hand to gently rest above the throat area.  Avoid touching this area.  The other hand between the breasts in the heart area.

Reiki on Plants

Plants love Reiki. To treat potted plants, place your hands around the pot for several minutes to treat the roots, then move your hands up to the leaves and treat them.  Hold seeds between your hands for as long as they draw energy.  Seeds treated this way, grow into healthier, stronger plants than those that are not treated.  Even cut flowers tend to last longer when treated with Reiki.

Much has been documented about the secret life of plants.  It has been proven that talking to them encourages them to grow better.  They are affected by our moods and emotions.  They are living specimens.  They even have auras!  In fact, leaves that have lost a piece, still show the aura of the complete leaf, very similar to that of a human who has lost a limb, but can still sensations from the limb.

Reiki on Pets

Pets love Reiki and make excellent candidates for Reiki practice.  Most animals are quite receptive to the energy and will lie quietly while you treat them.  Remember, animals do have chakras, but they don’t have the same chakras as humans.    Organs (in dogs, cats and other mammals) are situated roughly in the same positions as the human organs and can be treated accordingly.  You’ll probably have to pet your animal for a while, and then, once they have settled down, begin the treatment.  They will change position to move your hands on to different areas of their bodies, as though they know that they are receiving a Reiki treatment.  Usually their treatments are shorter than that of a human, and you’ll find that the pet becomes restless and will leave the treatment when it feels it has received enough Reiki.  Of course, this is all usually guided, and the animal has a good sense of timing.

Even goldfish love Reiki.  Try holding the goldfish bowl and watch how they come towards your hands as though they are drawn towards this source of energy.  It’s fascinating and fun, and the fish benefit from it too!

Reiki and Crystals

Since all matter is made of energy, and crystals are renowned for their vibrational qualities, it is possible to program and cleanse your crystals using Reiki.  Reiki 2 is more specific when dealing with this, however, for the purposes of Reiki 1 it is possible for you to hold the crystal in your hands as long as it draws energy from you.  Then, either keep the crystal close by, for continuous Reiki healing, or use the crystal in your healing sessions for more intensified sessions!  Remember to cleanse the crystal (using Reiki) and even program the crystal (by stating your intention) on a regular basis.

Reiki and Machines

Even though machines, cars, boats, bikes etc. do have their own energies, they tend to take on the energies conveyed by the owner of the machine.  Have you ever noticed how when things just couldn’t get worse, your car overheats?  You can “calm” and heal negative emotions picked up by the machine, by resting your hands on the machine for a while.  Try it!  You’ll be surprised how effective it is!

Reiki and Food

Like plants and flowers, food has energy too!  In fact, it’s so pronounced that distinctions have been made as to whether the food has Yin or Yang energy.  By resting your hands on the loaf of bread, or holding the egg in your hand you can charge the food with positive energy to promote easy digestion and good health.

Your relationship with the Divine

Reiki is for everyone.  Whatever faith you have, Reiki comes from the same source.  Reiki is not a cult or dogma.

It is not a new New-Age thing that has recently become fashionable.  Reiki is about working with energies that are as old as the Universe itself, and have been worked with for the same amount of time!  By being attuned you agree to become a channel for Pure Universal Energy, for  the good of all.  Reiki does not dictate the Source of the energy.  This is a very private individual thing.  Whether you choose to pray extensively before, during and after a treatment, or whether you choose to simply recognize a sense of gratefulness in yourself, the choice is yours, and never dictated by Reiki.

Reiki is indeed a gift that will have extraordinary effect on your life, and on the people you come into contact with.  Find your own way of giving thanks for the gift.

"I believe there exists One Supreme Being - the Absolute Infinite - a dynamic Force that governs the world and universe.  It is an unseen spiritual power that vibrates and all other powers fade into insignificance beside it.  So, therefore, it is Absolute!

I shall call it "Reiki"…

Being a universal force from the Great Divine Spirit, it belongs to all who seek and desire to learn the art of healing."

               Hawayo Takata

"I ask for these things, or their equivalents or better, according to free will, harming none, and for the good of all."    Pagan / Wiccan Request

I invoke the Healing Buddha and the Master Spirits of Reiki.
I ask that my channel be pure and clean, without fear, and with honor and love for all.

"Mother/Father, God/Goddess, Father Sky/Mother Earth, Holy Spirit, Archangel Michael and healing angels and Reiki guide,

I now call forth your energy and your power into this room.  I now ask you to bless me and to bless my hands that I may become a pure channel for the healing energy.  I pray that as this healing energy flows through me, it blesses, cleanses and purifies both myself and everyone I work with.

Please continue to guide and direct me each and every day of my life that I may be of service.  I ask for all that occurs in my life to be in the highest and best interest to all concerned."

Final Note

You have just touched the essence of yourself during this first-degree course.  Reiki 1 is the gift of “yourself” from you, to you. This gift is powerful and is anything you wish to make it.

Take time out.  Remember to perform the self-treatment every single day for at least 21 days, make special time for yourself to touch your thoughts, your emotions, your being. Look into your anger and worry.  Where do these emotions come from within you?  What lesson do they hold?

Reiki is a part of your being.  Cherish the truth of how you feel, what you do.

Reiki brings you situations and people who teach you about yourself.  Look around for your teachers, people who give you strength and clarity.

During the first-degree attunement, a Reiki Guide was called to be with you during treatments and otherwise, listen to your intuition and you'll be surprised what you hear.  Ask you guide for advise and see what comes back.  It may be in the form of a visualization or a thought.  Whatever it is, trust what you hear.  You can meet your guide through meditation.  During Reiki 2 (if you decide to go that route) there is a guided meditation for you to meet your guide.

Now is a good idea to start a Reiki Journal.  Keep notes of your meditations, the thoughts that come into your head during treatments, what you dream and your physical detoxification.  A journal is a wonderful thing to look back on… it shows you just how far you have come.

As you grow with Reiki, you will contribute balance and harmony to yourself and to your world.

The Decision on the Second Degree.

It is possible to receive your first, second and third degrees all in one weekend.  However, I feel that you should get used to Reiki, the energy and how it affects you and your life circumstances before you jump in at the deep end.

The second-degree attunement amplifies your connection with the Source.  You are given sacred symbols to turn up the power a hundred times stronger than first degree.  You also learn how to send Reiki across distances created not only by physical distance, but by also by time.  The symbols can be used for purification of food and medicines, crystals, over coming addictions, etc.

It certainly nothing you need to rush into, and will find that when it is the right time for you to take this path, then you will.  The Cosmos will only give you what you ask for on deep subconscious levels.  You will be drawn to take the second-degree attunement when you are ready for it.

In my own experience, Reiki 1 was far more of an eye-opener for me on a personal level; however, Reiki 2 certainly offered far more scope than Reiki 1.  You are given sacred symbols that allow you to access times, people, places and parts of yourself that you never knew existed. .  Reiki 2 is exciting, and fun!  It’s very different to Reiki 1, and needs to be experienced to appreciate its fantastic quality

Remember, a little Reiki is better than no Reiki at all.

Honoring all my Masters, teachers, students and Reiki Lineage, in gratitude for all the blessings I have received, I graciously and humbly thank "the powers that be" for this gift of love.

Blessed Be
