Something to think about...

I'm busy reading this book by David Burns, "The Feeling Good Handbook", and it made me laugh, but really, like laugh out loud, all by myself in this little room.

He's talking about how to avoid self defeating attitudes, how negative thoughts create negative feelings. One of the points he comes up with, is that you should treat yourself like another person, like a friend in the same "condition" or "situation".

His example involves a man he was counseling because he refused to go to the beach since he thought that his chest was too small. Burns stresses that we shouldn't be too hard on ourselves. This man with the sunken chest would not go to his friend with the same problem and say ,"Gee, your chest looks like a satellite dish! People will be staring at you and squirming with discomfort all day", but he would walk around and tell himself exactly the same thing.

I liked that. I immediately thought about how harsh we can be with ourselves, and how often this happens without even realizing how cruel we are being. I thought that the satellite dish visualization was hysterical... that's a great thing when you can visualize something so clearly that it racks your body with laughter. I looked at the cover of the book, and suddenly David Burns looked like a guy with a great sense of humor.

I went to the bathroom, and tried it out. I spoke into the mirror, chastising this person before me, being as rude as I possibly could be. The ludicrousness of this made me laugh. Then I spoke to me, as though I were a friend with the same sized butt. Much better... much easier to handle. I'm still smiling....
