SKILLED AND UNSKILLED VOLUNTEERS
Many people refer to our volunteers as skilled and unskilled, referring to knowledge and ability in a given capacity.  However, many of our volunteers who are refereed to as “unskilled,” because they lack the traditional training and/or experience normally associated with a given profession or task, are very capable and quickly become “skilled.”  We are always in need of individuals of all skill levels.  Often, many of our volunteers join our organization to gain skills useful to them in other pursuits.  Without the volunteers of all skill levels, the Habitat program will not work.  Volunteers are the key element of Habitat.

Site Supervisor. The Site Supervisors are individuals who are knowledgeable in the construction task being performed on the day they are the Site Supervisor, and are able to lead others in the accomplishment of that task.  They have the leadership skills necessary to coordinate large numbers of volunteers in the completion of the day’s task.  Site Supervisors are often professionals or experienced in Carpentry; Masonry; Plumbing; Electrical; Drywall Installation; Tape, Float and Texture; Heating and Air Conditioning; Flooring; Roofing;  and/or Painting.  The Site Supervisor is the individual who is responsible for the following, in order of importance:
               1.  Safety of everyone on the work site.
               2.  Quality of the workmanship being performed.
               3.  Enjoyment of the volunteers in the experience.
               4.  The accomplishment of the task(s) designated for the day.

Site Host/ess. The Site Host/ess greets the volunteers at the start of the work day and insures proper documentation is maintained.  The Site Host/ess also coordinates the day’s lunch.  The Site Host/ess is key to the day’s activities in that he/she sees to the administrative needs as volunteers come and go from the work site so that the Site Supervisor can concentrate on his/her responsibilities.

Crew Chiefs. Crew Chiefs are individuals who assist the Site Supervisor by supervising small groups of individuals on the work site to accomplish a specific task.  There are often several Crew Chiefs on a work site.  The Crew Chief may or may not be familiar with the accomplishment of the task prior to the work day.  Often a Crew Chief is selected at the beginning of the day by the Site Supervisor.  They are selected based on their ability to quickly receive instruction, to pass those instructions on to others, and supervise others in the accomplishment of the task.

Work Site Volunteers. Volunteers who come to Habitat are willing and eager to learn and help.  They simply need direction.  The Site Supervisor and Crew Chiefs provide that direction.

RESTORE
Habitat has a “Restore”.  The phrase implies to re-store something to usefulness.  We receive many items donated to us, both new and used.  The construction people first look at these items and determine if they can be used in the construction of a home.  If so, those items are set aside for future use.  If the item, for what ever reason, can not be used in the construction of a home, then it is put into the restore for sale to the general public.  The funds raised in this way are put back into the Habitat program to help with the cost of the program and purchasing the materials we do need.
Restore Manager. The volunteer Restore Manager coordinates the efforts of all involved in the Restore’s operation.  Specifically the sales volunteers, picking up of donated materials, and enhancing public awareness of the program.  By using a volunteer to manage the restore we are able to retain 100% of the sales for the Habitat program.

Restore Sales.
Restore Sales volunteers operate the store and handle the sales to the public.  By operating the store with volunteers we are able to retain 100% of the sales for the Habitat program.

Restore Donation Pickup.
Often there are businesses and individuals who want to donate materials to us, but are not able to bring them to the restore.  A volunteer is given the information and uses the Habitat truck and/or trailer to go and pick up the items.
Wood Working Group
Habitat has a group of individuals who come to the warehouse during the week to make things from the scraps of house construction to sell in the Restore.  Bird houses, picnic tables, dog houses, garden benches, etc...  Currently this group meets on Wednesdays starting at 9 am.  However, Habitat would like to expand this program to have a different group every day.  The sales from this program help provide funds to purchase materials to build homes.  Additionally, this program makes useful items from material that would otherwise be thrown into the landfill.
