The Rafters Memorial Cup became an instant classic as Paul took the Cup home after coming back from a 0-3 record at the halfway point. Andrew, Mike, and Eric were all 2-1 at the half, and feeling pretty good too. After four games Andrew was 3-1 and could smell the Cup, but he could not handle the pressure! After five games Mike was in first and Andrew in second, all they had to do was win game 6 and Mike would be champion, while Andrew would finish up somewhat satisfied getting his money back in second place. What happened next serves as the most pivotal point in Rafters Cup history, the moment where a mere series of euchre games being played for the "Sex Pot" turned into the heart pumping, stomach churning, blood fest that it is today. Mike and Andrew had the lead in the final game when Mike called spades, making Andrew very happy because he had the Jack, King, and 10 of spades. Then Paul asked Mike if he was sure, and obviously he wasn't because he decided to pass to Paul. Paul quickly called hearts and went alone before Andrew knew what was going on. Andrew followed with a ten-minute tirade arguing that Mike called it and spades was trump. After realizing he was wrong, Andrew threatened to "shove the cup down Mike's f***ing throat!" Paul then took the 4-point trick and the final points to win it all, earning the right to take his tainted Cup back with him to Harper Woods. | |||||||||||||||||
