monday, mar 17 - saint patrick's day
this weekend was a wee bit out of the norm for me.  friday was pretty normal in that ian, aidan, matt, mike r... and i went out to the moon under the water and came back (not mike r) to the s.u. until they closed at two.  then we all went to fiona's until something like four in the morning talking mainly about steve pease, who comes back today.  it was almost scary how much ian and aidan talked about steve, even fiona (steve's bird) was a little frightened.  the rest of the weekend worked around andreas' (and my) musically events.  saturday we played in the tartan bar with a couple of other people for some of the irish study students and professors from basically six to eleven, but it was pretty laid back and although music was always being played each one of us would walk off and get a drink every now and then.  sunday andreas and i played at the york house for baptism reception thingy from four to six pm and got paid £40.  it was a pretty good altogether even though both of us made some minor mistakes at times.  we mainly played traditional irish tunes like black is the colour of my true love's hair, mountain dew, auld lang syne, o danny boy, etc...  andreas also played a couple of songs of his own and when he took a break i play a couple of my own (but didn't sing).  so i didn't go to the parade on sunday but instead played with that dirty bastard of a roommate andreas...  but togeather we were two thirds of 'the hounds of ulster', the missing man was richard mills, an irish teacher at saint mary's who kicks up his leg when he's playing to the tune of wild thing and other rockin' songs from his generation.  he also knows everything there is to know about the beatles which makes for interesting conversations.  on a separate note, mother's day is on march 30th in england, fancy that.

last night i watched for the first time
schiendler's list which i though was a very good movie.  also i've been listening to simon and garfunkel: bridge over troubled water because its whats been in the cd player in the dining room so i play it when i eat breakfast or lunch.  i think its a cd i need to get.

its funny, the things you say when you are piss drunk (see previous entry), but for the most part its true but perhaps a little extreem.  i don't know why but once again i find myself in a bitter mood.  i'm not up for the drinking or the socialising in the student union tonight even though tonight's disco theme is 'bling bling' night.

mike rivecca is going to belfast with some mates the weekend after this coming weekend, i think i'll tag along because he said it would be alright with him.  belfast, how i've dreamed to go.  i don't know why but i've always wanted to go.  perhaps it is 'the troubles' that has plagued northern ireland for so long... belfast has seemed to be sort of the centre for it all or one of the main focuses.  i think it would be interesting from a historical stance.

papers... i've got three papers due at the end of the month.  i've been meaning to start on one of them i just haven't.  maybe friday i'll start doing some work, the day time that is, but then again i sort of wanted to check out some charity shops and get a hair cut.  i'm feeling pretty unmotivated to do any work of any kind so we'll see how that goes.

saint patricks day is this monday.  on sunday there will be a parade in london where my mates and i are going to get piss drunk.  its a shame that its at something like eleven in the morning though.  its going to be tough to wake up and get to central london by that time.  i'm also sure that there will be plenty of guinness there... ah yes, there's nothing like guinness in the morning.  turn on the radio? suitcase tripped you again. try to shrug it off shrug it off shrug it off. its only skin now. you need to understand there's nothing strange about this. you need to understand, you need to know that i'll be waving my hand watching you drown. quiet or loud, no ones around. but maybe you should sleep. maybe you should sleep. as funny as this is there's no one laughing.

we shall never give up... we shall never surrender

why do birds have to be such slags?  tonight i went to the s.u. and had a good time until krista came along... she sat on my lap and i thought to myself 'get the fuck off because my leg is going numb...' don't get me wrong, i only weigh 118 pounds or close to 8.5 stones, but if some bird sits on my lap don't you think my leg is going to go numb if she weighs more than i do?  and then she had to go and ruin things for aidan with a bird, which was partically my fault because i told her and thought i could trust her about 'things'... i know i'm being vague but trust me, she's a slag...  i bloodied my knuckles tonight because of my guilt/shame.  i wish i hadn't told her anything even though she may think that she's gained my trust.  birds are evil i tell you evil.  birds are works of the devil and never should i trust them again!  never!

i am a rock, i am an island...

however the bloaks are still cool in my book (aidan, matt, ian...), if i'm still cool with them if i haven't screw things up.  its like ryan had said before, 'bros before hoes'... i see his point and i agree unconditionally... birds blow but bloaks are friends and friends are for life, or so you would think so (or something along those lines).

"they shall get nothing but blood, sweat, toil, and tears..."
i just thought i should start out with a quote from good ol' sir winston churchill today.
i spent most of last week (tuesday through friday) being ill, the cold cold part of the the cold.  friday i decided not to be sick anymore or rather just thought 'damn the consequences' and when out on the town, well rather twickenham, with ian, aidan, matt, tara, and a couple of ian's friends (finch and mark) from out of town.  so a night out with english bloaks (and a bird).  i'd say we had a fair amount of drinks at the moon (under the water) and then headed back to the su (student union) for the disco.  and also snuck in six ashai's thanks to the extreemly large pockets on my coat.  fiona danced with me for two songs which was pretty fun (and innocent!).  after that the english bloaks and i and tara headed back to old house (dorms) and had some more pig's (ears... beers).  it was a pretty fun night.  saturday i joined with aidan and matt for a quiet night involving papa john's and a minority report (and an ashai or two).  sunday... kingston, the s.u. and old house again with the same bloaks.

i'm also working on a new list of the largest cities in the world (metropolitan areas).  i'm also trying to configure why these cities are important and sort out another list for importance (which will be more difficult and completely my own opinion but based mainly on economic importance).  there is no doubt in my mind that tokyo tops the list in both these categories because it is the largest city in the world, has a great finacial market (stock market), is technologicly advanced, and has the world's third highest gdp per capita...  also possibly because they sell beer out of vending machines.  new york would probably have to be second on most important city in the world because of technology and the strong economy from the united states.

also we had an interesting discussion in my 'development and globalisation' module this week... how do you develop the developing world?  it seemed like an endless argument... the western world has the majority of the world's wealth (the u.s. has about half of it) and it seems pretty impossible for us to spread the weath because somebody always wants the upper hand right?  who is going to threaten their own economic stance to benefit somebody elses?  it sort of a new form of imperialism how we drain third world countries of almost everything they have.  the only way they could get the upper hand is if corporations decide to move their opperations to the third world counties creating employment and injecting money into their economy, but still the weath would still go back to the shareholders and investors in the weathy in the western world.  consumer corporations wouldn't move there because there still wouldn't be much of a market because of how little the workers make, so everything would remain the same.  when i think of the developing world i mainly think of africa... however i do see a spread of the world weath because of china's rising industrial and technological advances... thats right, china, the world's second largest gdp holder (and rising?)
