This is Durango Colorado when
I moved here in 1977... Thing have changed here a lot in the last 20+ years,
There are now large trees lining Main street and traffic is as bad as LA.....
Fast food moved in and the sweet little town went from 12,000 to around 40,000... When I moved here I wanted to close the gate and throw away the key... It didn't work.... But I still love it, you can drive 5 miles out of town and be in the wilderness of God's Country.... |
The Strater Hotel on main was built in 1888 and still is as beautifull as ever altho prices have changed, in 77 you could stay here for around 25.00 a night now expect to pay 70+..... | ![]() |

It snows here but if you wait
you might not even have to shovel the walk, the temperature seems to go
up fast and the snow is soon gone.....
Of course we have our bad years like the winter of 1979-80 we had 12'(thats feet) of snow in town. This photo was taken from my balcony on E. Park Ave. around 1993 |
The snow train has been running for a few years now.. during heavy storms it shuts down untill the tracks can be cleared... I caught this shot of the train plowing snow in 1992 where the train runs under 550 North near Tammaron.... | ![]() |

Our biggest tourest attraction is the old Denver Rio Grande (now Durango & Silverton) runs all year round... Around May it runs 47 miles to Silverton and in the winter it runs to Cascade around 25 miles... It as recently bought from Charles Bradshaw who bought it in 1981 for 2,000,000 it was sold to Great American Railways out of Florida in 1997 for around 20,000,000,Bradshaw bought it back in 11-98, and has now sold it again ('99).... I'd say that was a good investment..... |
