Semi vs Train... In about 1987
a semi with a load of potatoes lost control about 11 miles out on 160 West..
He was driving too fast when he hit the downhill of Hesperus hill..and
he lost his brakes, what a wild ride he must have had through those three
sharp curves... at the intersection of 550 & 160 there is a dead end,
they figured he was going about 80mph when his rig hit an embankment and
went airborne into the D&S railroad yard and crashed into old 473....
The impact knocked the engine off it's tracks....
Wondering what happened to the driver.. he broke both heals, when he seen what was about to happen and climbed into the sleeping birth.... Amazing no one was seriously injured.... |
| When there are a lot of passengers the D&S has to use what they call a Doubleheader.. to get over the steep grades to Silverton... A lot of pulling power there.... |  |
