My husband is Rocco Ferrante from Lettomanoppello; his faather's family's nickname is La Lefant (elephant); his mother's family is Profenna, and their nickname is La Sorig (the rat).  I was born in Lettomanoppello and I immigrated to Portland, ME in 1987.  My father's family - Di Pietrantonio - in Lettomanoppello has the nickname La Torr' (the tower), and my mother's family, Blasioli, has the nickname La Pellastr' (the hen) or Gianpitr'.  There are only two Blasioli families in Lettomanoppello, but many more in Manoppello.  Family nicknames are very important to know, because most of the time it is the only way to find relatives.

My parents are from Lettomanoppello - my father's name is Donato FERRANTE, his mother's maiden name was DI MATTEO.  My mother's maiden name is Annetta PROFENNA. Her mother's maiden name is DE SANCTIS. I am also related to many of the DI PIETRANTONIO's in town.

Speaking of which, I wish to mention something that may be of interest to other fellow lettesi...In March
(2001), my 2nd cousin, Vittorio DI PIETRANTONIO sadly passed away at the age of 60 from a sudden heart attack.  Vittorio and
his wife, Lucietta owned and operated a well-known local bar in Lettomanoppello called "Bar Centro."  (It's even featured in an old postcard of the town)  Their bar is located in the main piazza of Letto, directly across from the Comune (town hall or municipio).  Even after all these years, it is still a popular hang-out for the young and old.  I know my family and many others I have spoken with will miss seeing him (always with a smile) in his usual spot behind the counter.

My mother was Chiarina MANCINI, born in Lettomanoppello on January 3, 1891 or 1892.  Her parents were Biagio or Biase MANCINI and Vincenze GIUSTI.  My mother's mother died in childbirth when my mother was about 9 years old, and my mother and her sister Liberata went to Turrivalignani to live with relatives or family friends.  Her dad later remarried and moved to New York City and eventually to Portland, ME. (At least that is my understanding).

My mother - Chiarina MANCINI - married Oreste FIORELLINI in Turri in December, 1908.   He was born in the city of Torre de Passeri (Chieti).   He was adopted by Angelo and Filomena Fiorellini (not sure if there last name was Fiorellini or what) and they moved to Turrivalignani. I never knew my grandfather Angelo, but I did know my grandmother Filomena and she is buried under the name Filomena Fiorellini.  My father was 10 or 11 years old he began an apprenticeship in the making of shoes with a local artisan in Turrivalignani.

My father, Oreste FIORELLINI, emigrated to New York in 1912, sponsored by his father-in-law Biase MANCINI, who had emigrated earlier and was living in New York.  About 10 months later, my mother, with her one year old son Biagio and her sister, Liberata Mancini (12 years old), also arrived in New York.

If anyone has information about this family, please contact me.
