In 1969-70, Matthews joined New Madrid, Parma, - Lilbourn, and Portageville to form the New Madrid County R-1- District. A vocationaltechnical school to serve all units was build at Howardville (between New Madrid and Lilbourn.) The Alumni Association was organized in 1935 as a farewell dinner for Mr. Englehart who was moving to Leadwood. Officers elected were: 'President - William H. Deane, Jr. Vice President - Frank E. Sibley, Jr., Secretary - Glenda Waters Conrad, and Treasurer - William N. Roberts, Jr. As the lunchroom could not accommodate the crowd, tables were set up in the gymnasium. The ladies of the Christian and Methodist Churches alternated in preparing the banquet in their homes and the school lunch room., The. Senior class decorated the gym and the officers made the place cards. When the number of alumni and guests grew to 200, the church ladies declined to serve and the banquet was moved to various eating establishments in Sikeston. Each class had a representative. on the planning committee. In 1952, the Alumni Association petitioned the Board of Education to honor Mrs. Lillie Zimmer, who began teaching primary grade in 1928 and was named Elementary Principal in 1941, by naming the Elementary Building the Zimmer Building. Mrs. Zimmer was dying of cancer. Permission was granted.
