(p9)    In 1950-5 1, Mr Vergil Sisson became Superintendent of Schools and a full music department was instituted. Bands and Choral, groups successfully competed on District and State levels, individuals, ensembles, band, and choral groups winning first ratings.
Mr. Lester King became Superintendent of Schools in 1952-53. Other three-director school, districts that joined the Matthews Consolidated District were York, Fairview, Cade, Bowman, Wilburn,. Pleasant Valley, Union Grove and Henderson Mounds.
In 1958-59, Canalou High School joined Matthews in a re-organization. A new gym, music rooms, cafeteria, and 8 elementary classrooms were built. The district now encompassed the north end of New Madrid County with the. exception of the Morehouse School District. Boundaries extended from 1 1/2 miles north of Kewanee on the south, to the Scott County line on the north, from
the Stoddard County line on the west to the Mississippi County line on the east. Baccalaureate and commencement services of the Class of 1959 were held in the Canalou gymnasium because the original frame gymnasium at Matthews had been torn down for construction of the new gymnasium, cafeteria, and multipurpose room with stage for elementary school programs.

In 1965, all students who lived in Matthews School District were brought to Matthews to school. Full integration was achieved. Matthews High School became State Basketball champions in Class M under the guidance and
