For many magic started out as an interest and then it became a hobby. For some, it led into a means of making some extra money while having fun at the same time. For even others, it became a viable source of secondary income. And for others, it became their sole source of income and a full career which the love! It has become their livelihood and one they enjoy to the fullest extent. At the same time, because magic has become a business for them, magicians end up acquiring business expenses just like most companies. They have... ** Office & magic supplies, ** Costumes, ** Upkeep of equipment &/or animals, ** Training & rehearsals, ** Practice time (yes, all magicians have to practice their art if they want to be good and entertaining), ** Travel costs, ** Employees (i.e. assistants, technicians, & etc.) in some cases, and ** other expenses. Yes, making a career as a professional magician or even developing a serious second source of income as a magician can be expensive. But the professional magician doesn't see it as an expense. He or she sees it as an investment in providing you the best possible entertainment for you and your guests. Therefore, a professional magician's fee is designed to help cover both their living and business expenses so that they are able to continue to provide you the best possible magic entertainment value for your guests and entertainment dollars. If you desire to provide your guests professional magic entertainment then you should expect to pay a professional fee. When you hire someone that treats magic as a hobby you are simply just closing your eyes and hoping for the best. Plus, you shouldn't expect to pay but a small fee, if any at all. Why take the risk of letting down your guests and ruining your party? Do your homework. Don't be afraid to ask a magician you are considering hiring what his or her fee is and what it includes in regards to the show. This will help you to better compare apples to apples and thus make sure you are getting the best value for your money. For example, let's say you want a professional stage magician to perform at your anniversary party at your house. So you call... Magician #1: He says that he will charge $300 to do a 45 minute show that will have 3 doves and a rabbit in it, some audience participation, and other magic routines. However, though he will provide sound, he does not provide any special effects and he is the only one that will be showing up. However, he only accepts checks or cash... Magician #2: She says that she will charge $500 to do a 45 minute show that will have 7 doves, 2 rabbits, and a dog that all appear of and nowhere and even vanish in thin air. There will also be audience participation where the particpants get souvenirs. She will also provide her own music, special effects, curtains, and an assistant. At the same time, she accepts checks, cash, and credit cards. Already you can see that Magician #2 will provide better entertainment value for you and your guests. Both are professional magicians, are very good at magic, and provide wonderful entertaining shows. However, for a little extra you get a lot more with Magician #2. Of course, if you can't afford the extra $200 then Magician #1 would be an excellent choice. At the same time, you could ask Magician #2 what she could provide for $300. So, when hiring a magician, find out what their show will entail, how long they have been performing the style of magic you are considering, if they have references that they can provide, what their price includes in the show. You are trying to determine if they are a professional magician or not. Then above all else, remember... YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR! |
