When it comes to hiring a magician, there are, in my opinion, only two types of magicians...

Tricksters & Entertainers!

Tricksters are those magicians that do a bunch of tricks for your guests but yet hardly anyone, if anyone at all, walks away feeling entertained.  Tricksters may have been doing magic for many years or just a few months.  They know a lot of tricks and may even be some of the best at performing the mechanics of the trick.  However, in spite of all their skill, knowledge, and bag of tricks, they just don't know how to entertain.

Entertainers on the other hand may only know a hand full of tricks but they know how to make those tricks entertaining.  People walk away amazed and feeling like they just experienced something unbelievable.  They are entertained.  Entertainers may or may not have been performing for years.  The main difference between the trickster and the entertainer is that the entertainer can know the exact same tricks as the trickster and he or she will give you more value for your entertainment dollar and truly entertain your guests.  Whereas, in many cases, people walk away from a trickster feeling like they have been tricked or had the "wool pulled over their eyes" or that they never really experienced any magic at all.  This is not a good feeling.  You want your guests to be entertained, to enjoy themselves...NOT feel like they have had the "wool pulled over their eyes"...and to feel like they have experienced some magic.

You want to receive the most value for your entertainment dollar don't you?  You do want to make sure that your guests, whether children or adults, are thoroughly entertained in such a way that they leave with your event or restaurant on their minds and a smile on their face, dont' you?  Of course you do!  Therefore, you want to make sure that the magician you hire is a professional.  Why?

A professional magician is more than likely an expert at entertaining people and not a trickster.  It's their livelihood.  If they are not good at entertaining then they will not be around for long.  If you want a magician that knows how to entertain your guests versus one that just knows a bunch of tricks then you should seek out the professional magical entertainer.  If you are hiring a close-up or parlor magician then don't be afraid to ask them to perform a few tricks for you so you can see how good they are and how entertaining they are.  Ask them if they are performing in a public venue so you can come and watch them.  If you are considering hiring a stage magician, ask them if there is a public performance you can attend so you can check them out.  Ask if they have a promotional pack you can look at.  If not, see if they have a web site with pictures and testimonials on it or any videos of their act or at the very least, references of customers you can call to ask about the show.
Above all else, when hiring a magician, remember...
