What is my purpose of hiring magical entertainment?
Is it to be the highlight of your evening or the lowlight or somewhere in between?  Do you want your guests to walk away remembering the event or your restaurant telling others about how much fun they had there or do you just want them to be slightly entertained and the magic just kind of part of the "background" of the event or restaurant?  Magic entertainment is powerful and can make your event or restaurant the most memorable of all.

Do you want a magician to stroll around and perform magic for your guests, have people gather about a table while a magician performs his or her mysteries, provide an illusion show for your guests or a combination of the three?

Again, it all depends on the purpose of your entertainment, the venue you are providing, and the layout of the facilities you are providing.  As mentioned above, a stage magician will probably need a stage to perform on.  Some can perform their show on the floor of your living room.  Also, the level of show you are hiring from the magician will determine the price of your show and where it can be performed.  Always ask what the price being quoted you includes and what kind of arrangements are needed to perform the act (i.e. a stage, a solid wall with no mirrors or windows, electrical outlet access, indoor or outdoor performance, and etc.).

If hiring a close-up magician to walk around and perform magic, then you need to find out if he or she needs a place to store their equipment or to reset some of their routines at, if there are discounts if they perform a longer period of time, if they give out souvenirs in some of their routines or not, if they do more than just card tricks, and so-forth.  For instance, I perform a few card tricks, but I also do mind reading & prediction routines, pass solid objects through other solid objects, tear and restore routines, change a dollar bill to a higher value bill and back again, and much more.  I need a safe place to store my wares and to possibly set up routines.

If hiring a parlor magician then you will want to ask some of the same questions you ask a stage magician.  However, parlor magic is usually a more up close and personal style of magic but not as much as close-up magic.  Therefore, you will want to find out if they have audience participation, need electrical access, have any special requirements, need a table or will bring their own and if they need a table what are the requirements, need privacy when they get there to set up, will give out souvenirs with some of their routines, and so-forth.

How much are you willing to invest in your magic entertainment?
Most people spend most of their entertainment budget on the food, location, and music/DJ.  However, people will rarely remember either of these very long unless they are bad and then they will never let you live it down.  If you are expecting people to dance at a gathering just think about to gatherings you've attended in the past.  You will probably remember that most of the people did not dance.

When you hire a professional magician to entertain your guests, you will not be disappointed.  Your guests will remember the great time they had at your event and that's what you want, isn't it?  No matter what, figure out how much you are willing spend, interview a few magicians and adjust your figure accordingly if need be, and then call the magician or two you feel will give you the best PROFESSIONAL value for your investment and ask them what they can offer based on your budget.  Then simply decide which one you prefer.

Also, if you are hiring a professional stage or parlor magician, some of them will provide their own sound system and have music that can entertain your guests.  Feel free to ask them if they are also able to DJ for your party as well.  Some will for a little extra fee.  This could end up saving you some money.  However, if you hire a DJ and a stage or parlor magician then make sure that the DJ understands when the magician begins his or her act that the music needs to stop until the magic entertainment is over.  If you have a close-up magician, the DJ can continue playing his/her music.

Now, above all else, remember...
