What is a Bodhran? |
A bodhran is an Irish-frame drum. As I stated on the home page, the frame is usually made of wood or metal, and bent in a circular shape. |

Holding a Bodhran and Tipper |

The skin of a bodhran is most commonly made of goat. Some makers use sheep, and some even use kangaroo! You can also buy drums with synthetic heads. These, on occasion, don't provide the same tone as animal skin, but they aren't affected by weather changes, and may last much longer than other drums! |

- How to Treat Your Bodhran |

Some drums have painted skins. They are pretty, but the designs may fade over time and use. |

A bodhran is played using a tipper, beater or cipin. This is really just a stick, generally with two raised "knobs" on either end. They are of little cost, but some players prefer to construct their own with a small wood lathe. Each tipper is unique, and provides a different tone! Make sure to purchase one that fits your hand. Tippers usually range from 7" to 9", but these lenghts vary. |
