Annual Secretaries Report February 5, 2007

It is very likely that you all think I am again going to tell you that I want to give this job away. However, even though it is free to anyone who wants it, I am not going to do that this time. During the Christmas break, we had a more pressing job on hand and I am going to present you with an unexpected bombshell.
On the Monday after our lovely Christmas Lunch, a letter was received from the Migrant Resource Centre, which is the organization that runs this Hall. (Letter). Therefore, after nearly four years of meetings here, we have lost the use of this facility and will not be able to meet here again after today.
The same day the following reply was sent to them. (Letter) A reply to that letter was received the following Wednesday. (Letter) That is not very satisfactory.
The following weekend a letter was composed to the Adelaide City Council. (Letter) A reply was promptly received on Monday. (Letter) So far so good. After the Christmas break, on January 2 another letter was sent to the Migrant Resource Centre. (Letter) I received a return message on January 29 telling me that that message was deleted from their system without being read.
Mail was received on January 3 when a letter from the Adelaide City Council arrived. (Letter) After consultation with Barrie and Lynn, Barrie went to investigate the Council Library in Grote Street and found it to be of use and near to the City Centre. I then went to investigate the Sturt Street facility and apart from the distance from the City Centre found that to be suitable as well. To arrange the use of these facilities a visit was made to the Adelaide City Council office were I had a 30 minute conversation with the very friendly Manager of Library and Community Services Megan Berghuis who happened to be of Dutch origin. It was then found that the Grote street facility is set up as a Classroom and only available to students so it could not be guaranteed on a permanent basis. However, the Sturt Street facility was available to us on a permanent basis and because we are a not-for-profit organization, we can have it free of charge. A full year’s booking was then made.
The Club program has subsequently been updated and new copies are on the table. In addition, a schedule of bus services running through Sturt Street has been produced and copies of that are on the table as well. Copies of the “Adelaide Connector”, the Adelaide City Council free bus service around the City are also on the table. We sincerely hope you can see the predicament we have been in and will accept our new facilities, as they are very user friendly. Besides the open space there is a table tennis set up free to use for anyone interested and free public Internet access. For those of you with cars there are many 2-hour free parking spaces in Sturt Street as well as on Whitmore square
Regarding the membership, this now stands at 261. We had four new members join during the year and 30 that we know of have passed away.

Thank you all.
