With expections high and being champions we were to strenghten the side in hopes of retaining the title. The major signing this 1930/31 season was former Everton and Southampton forward Arthur Dominey. The title was to slip from our hands to Cowes who finished 12 points ahead of our runners up spot.In the FA Cup we progressed to the final qualifying round, playing away to Taunton Town where we were well beaten 5-1. Local competions saw us lose in the semi-final of Gold Cup to Ryde whilst making an early exit in the Hampshire Senior Cup. It was also the time when the first organised, supporters club was put into being, and were to raise revenue for the club, who had extended the grandstand to meet the demand of the extra supporters coming to see the highest standard of football in the clubs history. 1931/32 Saw Newport looking to regain the league title, several new signing were made. This included Billy Rawlings who came to Newport as a former England International (2 caps) and former Manchester United player, via a season at Port Vale before joining us. This wasn't the only playeer to join the 'port with professional experience, also signed this season were Jimmy McNess, Cyril Chandler and George Cook. The season turned out to be a 2 horse race with Newport eventually losing out to Bournemouth Gasworks. The Cups provide the club with success, the reserves won the Hampshire Intermediate Cup and the senior team winning the Hampshire Senior Cup. The match being played at the Dell was watched by a crowd of 20,544 and they witnessed a 2-1 win for Newport over Cowes, both goals from Rawlings. |

Newport team 1931/32. Hampshire Senior Cup winners Back Row: B.Fry, J.Swinden, S.Smith, R.Floyd, T.Coutts,B.Parker and Darkie Chase Front Row: J.McNess, A.Dominey, B.Rawlings, F.Chandler and G.Cook 1932/33 saw Newport regaining the League title and retaining the Hampshire Senior Cup, Rawlings scoring 55 goals . The local cups were to prove fruitless this season. The club saw a drop in income, the supporters were to assist in raising funds by launching a 'shilling fund' which raised £75 for the club. 1933/34 Saw the club become a registered company ( on a co-operative basis) and over 300 £1 shares were taken up by supporters. On the field the club failed to hold onto the silverware from the previous season, the last match this season saw Andover come to Churrch Litten, to play for the Vernon Cup. This match was to be Billy Rawlings last Match when he scored a hat-trick in the 6-4 win. In the league a scoreline of Newport 13 New Milton 4 stands-out. 1934/35 was to be disappointing by recent standards, finishing 4th. In the FA Cup however saw the club meet Weymouth at Church Litten, 3000+ saw the match tied, with half that seeing the terras win the replay. 1935/36 Saw the FA Cup being a major talking point of this season, after winning through to the first round proper at the expense of Bath City, we were to face Yeovil & Petters Utd away and won the tie 1-0 with goal from Reg Gardiner. The second round draw saw another away tie,this time to Southall where we lost 8-0. In the league a fixture pile-up due to the FA Cup run saw us having the end the season playing 10 games in 19 days, we end the season in second place 2 points behind Bournemouth Gasworks. The team did however regain the IW Gold Cup beating the Second Hampshire Regiment 3-0. 1936/37 was a mediocre year in comparison to previous seasons, finishing third. In the cup we did reach 2 finals and lost them both to Cowes, the Hampshire Professional Cup and IW Gold Cup. 1937/38 The club saw Gold twice this season, firstly it was the clubs 'Golden Jubilee year' and we won the IW Gold Cup beating Cowes 5-1 for the clubs only success this season. 1938/39 Newport saw the Hampshire League trophy in the cabinet once more this season, scoring 100+ goals for the sixth successive season, winning the last game of the season 12-0 and end the season 4 points clear. In the FA Cup we reached the final qualifying round losing 1-0 to Hayes away. The club also won the Combination Cup ( which was only played for six times, Newport being the only non-league team to win it). The Church Litten crowd were also graced by the Southampton 1st team in the Vernon Cup, they won 2-0 in front of 2000+ fans. 1939/40 The league was suspended due to the out-break of war. The club did however, along with other Island side provide entertainment, as the Regiments that were stationed here had a number of professional players amongst their ranks. |
