1960-61 the seasons on the field was to be a fairly successful affair. The highlight being winning the Hampshire Senior Cup, this was coupled with a final appearance in the Russell-Cotes Cup and a forth spot finish in the League. The FA Cup was cut short in the first tie, going down 2-1 at home to Cowes. The major stumbling block this season, was the falling attendance’s that contributed to a severe drop in income for the club. The supporters club again was to assist the club with a record donation of almost Ł1250. 1961-62 The longer that the season went on the greater the decline was the story this season. The team couldn't do any better than finish 13th in the league, whilst our grip on the Hampshire Senior Cup was to be prised free in 90 minutes. The season disappointment was to continue in the FA Cup, having beaten Fareham Town, the 2nd Qualifying round saw us well beaten by Cowes 5-1 in the replay of the tie after we drew the first game 0-0 at Church Litten. 1962-63 This season was to see Newport go without playing for nearly two months after the Boxing Day fixture against Cowes. The break did the team some good, only 4 of the last 14 games were lost and finished a creditable 5th place. The highlight of the season was to come in the Hampshire Senior Cup, for the first time since 1958 we were to register a double figure score-line against East Cowes Vics the game ending 12-2. The club was to be the benifituaries of another donation from the Supporters Club; this time the figure handed over to the club was approaching Ł1900. 1963-64 For much of this season we were to head the table only to see this lead overtaken by the eventual champions Fareham Town. The reserves playing the first season in the Hampshire League Third Division were to finish second by just one point to East Cowes Vics. 1964-65 The club were to sign Dave Stratton who scored 34 goals in his first season for the club. The season also saw Chris Chiverton make his mark at the club along with the emerging talents of Eddie Walder. The league was to end in third place for Newport, 18 points behind Fareham Town who became first team to win the league three times in a row. The FA Cup saw us pitched in to play Fareham who dispatched us at the first hurdle 3-2. The IW Gold Cup semi-final saw us go out to Third Division Champions Ryde Sports. The Reserves were to finish in a mid-table position in the second division. 1965-66 The season started with the signing of several promising Island youngsters, these included Bernie Cullen, Barry and Trevor Allen (who signed on as a pro at Southampton after this season). Four games in and ten goals to his credit Barry Allen and the team put in run of unbeaten games that lasted until November. This run included a match against Fareham Town, winning 2-1 and in the last minute we concede a penalty and Bernie Cullen saved it. The league was there for the taking but a string of bad results in April saw us hand over the Championship to Fareham Town. The League form extended to the cup competitions, the HSC saw the trophy come back to Church Litten after an extra-time goal from John Raynor in the pouring rain at Fratton Park. The Gold Cup was to see Trevor Allen sign out with a hat trick in the 4-0 win over Cowes. |

1965/66 Hampshire Senior Cup and IW Gold Cup Winners Back row: John Rayner, Trevor Griggs, Eddie Walder, John Oxford, John Good, Barry Allen, Trevor Allen, Stan Neil and Ted Williams Front Row: Chris Cheverton, Bernie Cullen, Roy Penney, Barry Dyer, Steve Williams (with cup) and Roy Seaman. 1966-67 With England’s Success in the World Cup there was high hopes across the country for many club in the own little world - and we were no different. Fareham went on to take the league for the fifth time in a row as we finished in 4th place. The Hampshire Senior Cup final saw us take on Cowes in the first "All Island" final since 1932. Cowes who were already relegated were the under dogs for this final, and in true cup tradition the underlings were to score twice in extra time to take the prize. The defence of the IW Gold Cup saw us embarrassed once more this time at the hands of Brading Town this tie losing 2-1. The club was facing more difficulties on the financial front, this led to the club deciding that only one team could be run and as a result the reserves were pulled from the league. 1967-68 With only one team at the club, several players saw their futures being at other clubs. This season was the first as sole representatives of the Island in the Hampshire League. This season saw the return of Chris Chiverton having not played the previous season due to rheumatoid arthritis. The season's form was inconsistent and as a result the best we could manage in the league was sixth place. In what was to be an ironic twist to the end of the season, some of the former Newport contingent went on to ousts Fareham Town from their Championship top spot, with Basingstoke Town. The FA Cup saw us reach the third qualifying round before coming unstuck against Salisbury City, 3-0 away. The HSC was to end at the hands of second division Christchurch, whilst the IW Gold Cup was to provide the seasons only trophy with our 2-0 win over Sandown. 1968-69 This season was to be the lowest point in Newport’s history, with Chris Chiverton and Roger Jones moving to Basingstoke Town, returning to Church Litten to help their new club inflict the biggest ever defeat 10-2. The season was see Eddie Walder break his leg against Poole in February and worst still the club were to suffer their first ever relegation. The season also ended with Newport failing to score in eight out of the last nine games. 1969-70 The season started with many new faces at Newport, it also started with a new manager in Roy Shiner. The team started with two heavy defeats, with the aim was to regain top league status at the first attempt, this was denied in the space of two games. The first was on Easter Monday at Cowes when we lost 1-0 and the next game at Botley, saw the host side take the points and with it the second promotion spot, Swaythling getting the other. The season also saw the return of Eddie Walder, who made up for lost time hitting 5 goals on the return match against Sholing Sports. |
