The History of Trunks or Defiance in the Face of Dispair: The Last Remaining Super Warriors; Gohan and Trunks (to give its proper title) has long been one of my favorite Dragonball films. It was the first DVD I brought and is continually played. Its a really good Special for two reasons. First of all it has a plot that is coherent with the actual Timeline and Episodes. Something that barely happens in the other movies. And secondly it explains so much about Mirai Trunks.

The Box: This is the box description for the History of Trunks DVD. It helps to explain the origins of Trunks and the downfall of his world. "When Goku dies of a deadly virus, it seems like the end of the world. But the powerful Master's passing proves to be merely a presage of the horrible tragedies that are on the way! When two Androids appear and start destroying the great cities of the Earth, the planet is plunged into darkness and its inhabitants are living in fear. But there is one last hope! Goku's son, Gohan is now a man, and though outnumbered by the demonic Androids, he does have a special young teenager named, named Trunks on his side! As Gohan trains Trunks, it seems like the world is collapsing around them! Can they put a stop to the horrible progression of evil? This is the story of the future that never was!"

Manga: There was also a History of Trunks Manga which actually made a few changes from the Anime or rather the Anime developed a few things from the Manga and used its own artistic license. Essentially Trunks was already A Super Saiya-jin before Gohan died. At his death he merely screamed before smashing the ground whereas in the Anime it is the Death that transforms him.
