Upper Soda Springs Resort started in the early1850's as a small hostel along the Siskiyou Trail from California to Oregon.  By the mid-1850's, Ross McCloud and Mary Campbell McCloud built a more substantial inn for travelers, and the main California-Oregon stagecoach road later passed right in front of Ross and Mary's inn, similar to the artist's rendering, above.   In the 1880's, the railroad was built parallel to Ross's road -- with a stop for Upper Soda.
These next thirty years were the height of Upper Soda Springs, as fashionable people from the San Francisco Bay Area (and around the world) came for the summer, to enjoy the mineral spring water, the beautiful surroundings, and the hunting and fishing.
After leaving their ancestoral home on the
Trinity River, the Tauhindauli clan of Wintu Indians lived at Upper Soda.  For many years, the Tauhindaulis and the relatives of Ross and Mary shared the property at Upper Soda, and were friends and neighbors.
Unfortunately, the old Resort and its way of life would not survive the 1920's -- the arrival of the automobile and changing fashions guaranteed that.  By the 1940's, almost all the old buildings were torn down, and the Resort began to fade into memories ... and old photographs.
