Veterinary Immunology Books

General

Not many veterinarians are aware that Prof Peter Doherty, who was the Nobel Laureate for Medicine in 1996, is the only veterinarian to win the world's most prestigious scientific prize. He is regarded as one of the world's foremost immunologists, for which he gives credit to the special emphasis on science that occurs in veterinary training. Doherty, an Australian-trained veterinarian, was awarded with his co-worker Swiss scientist Rolf Zinkernagel for their discovery of how the immune system recognizes virus-infected cells. Their discovery in the early 1970s has revolutionized today's understanding of general mechanisms used by the cellular immune system to recognize both foreign micro-organisms and self molecules.

The Major Histocompatibility Complex Region of Domestic Animal Species
by Lawrence B. Schook (Editor) & Susan J. Lamont (Editor)

Hardcover: 336 pages
Publisher: CRC Press; (August 28, 1996)

Book Info
The major histocompatibility complex (Mhc) is one of the few identified gene systems in domestic animals that is associated with quantitative traits such as disease resistance, immune response, growth, and reproduction. As knowledge of this important system increases, we move closer toward the reality of genetic enhancement of animal welfare and production efficiency. This book represents the current state of knowledge on the Mhc of agriculturally important animals and explores the latest advances in technology. For the first time, the unique findings of recent Mhc research are presented in a single source. The Major Histocompatibility Complex Region of Domestic Animal Species begins with a discussion of the evolution of Mhc. The chapters are then organized with respect to specific species, with a chapter devoted to each. The Mhc of mice and humans are used as a common reference for comparisons between diverse species. The text concludes with a look at future strategies and directions in Mhc research. Comparative immunologists and geneticists, veterinarians, animal breeders, researchers, and university and postgraduate students will all benefit from this detailed look at the evolution, structure, and organization of Mhc.

Cytokines in Veterinary Medicine
by Virgil E. C. J. Schijns (Editor) & Marian C. Horzinek (Editor)

Hardcover: 324 pages
Publisher: CABI Publishing, CAB International; (January 1998)

Book Info
Cytokines are proteins that act as intercellular signals in a variety of processes, including embryonic development, haematopoiesis, stress, inflammation, immunity and tissue report. In the 1980s researchers established the link between cytokines and the immune, endocrine and neuronal systems for both humans and rodents. With advances in recombinant DNA and PCR technologies, cytokine research has exploded, with much recent work focusing on farm and domestic animals. This book addresses the clinical potential of cytokines for veterinary medicine. Covering cattle, sheep, pigs, horses, cats and dogs, the book reviews the role of cytokines in pathogenesis, diagnosis and therapy for animals diseases. It discusses the use of animal models to investigate analogous human diseases. It also examines how cytokines might be used to monitor diseases and improve the health of livestock, and how they might work as vaccine adjuvants or adjuncts to chemotherapy. Written by leading authorities from Europe, North America, Africa and Australia, the book is essential for researchers in veterinary microbiology and immunology, as well as medical scientists interested in applying this work to human health.
