Zoonoses and Communicable Diseases Common to Man and
Animals
by Pedro N. Acha
Paperback: 963 pages
Publisher: Pan Amer Health Org; 2nd edition (May 1987)
Book Info
This book represents a compendium on zoonotic and communicable diseases
throughout the world. Among the 176 diseases covered, some are emerging
zoonoses like Lyme disease, Rocio encephalitis, Oropouche fever, and Ebola
disease. It notes the spread of the Rift Valley fever virus and the
protozoan Cryptosporidium. The book is divided into five parts on the basis
of the etiologic agents' position in biological classification: bacterioses;
mycoses; chlamydioses and rickettsioses; viroses; and parasitic zoonoses.
Discussions of the 176 diseases cover information on synonymy, etiology,
geographic distribution, occurrence in animals, the disease in man, the
disease in animals, the source of infection, mode of transmission, the role
of animals in the epidemiology, and disease diagnosis and control.
Epidemiologic and ecologic factors conducive to development of the disease
are emphasized. Also included are numerous maps, graphs, and illustrations
that facilitate understanding of the transmission cycle as well as the
geographic distribution of some of these diseases. This book answers the
need for a reference text for schools of public health, medicine, and
veterinary medicine, as well as by bureaus of public and animal health.
". . . among the most complete and best
documented books on the subject of zoonoses . . . an extended, updated, and
rewritten edition of an important manual which is used by many veterinary
schools in Europe and North America."

Zoonoses: Biology,
Clinical Practice, and Public Health Control
by Stephen R. Palmer (Editor), E. J. L. Soulsby (Editor), David Ian
Hewitt Simpson (Editor)
Hardcover: 948 pages
Publisher: Oxford University Press; (May 1998)
Book Info
Zoonoses are diseases naturally transmissible between vertebrates
and man including those contracted through direct contact with infected
animals or carcases, food or water contamination, or inhalation of infected
dust. They are becoming an increasingly important public health issue. This
multidisciplinary book is written by recognized experts in biology,
epidemiology, and human and vetinary medicine. Divided into three
sections--Bacteriology, Parasitology and Virology--it comprehensively covers
all zoonoses. Each of the seventy chapters discusses a separate disease,
including its history, the scientific basis for its management, the
microbiology of the causative agent, pathogenesis, clinical features,
symptoms and signs, diagnosis, treatment and prognosis. The epidemiology and
epizoology of each disease is described alongside the strategies for
prevention and control. Includes bibliographic references and index.

Handbook of Zoonoses,
Section A: Bacterial, Rickettsial, Chlamydial, and Mycotic Zoonoses 2nd Edition
by Charles M. Hendrix
Hardcover: 538 pages
Publisher: CRC Press; 2nd edition (August 22, 1994)
Book Info
Iowa State University, Ames. This multivolume handbook presents the most
authoritative and comprehensive reference work on major zoonoses of the
world. The Handbook of Zoonoses covers most diseases communicable to humans,
as well as those diseases common to both animals and humans. It identifies
animal diseases that are host specific and reviews the effects of various
human diseases on animals. Discussions address diseases that remain
important public and animal health problems and the techniques that can
control and prevent them. The chapters are written by internationally
recognized scientists in their respective areas of disease, who work or have
worked extensively in the most affected areas of the world. The emphasis for
each zoonosis is on the epidemiology of the disease, the clinical syndromes
and carrier states in infected animals and humans, and the most current
methods for diagnosis and approaches to control. For infectious agents or
biologic toxins, which may be transmitted by foods of animal origin, a
strong focus is placed on food safety measures. The etiologic and
therapeutic aspects of each disease important to epidemiology and control
are identified. Previous eight-volume edition, 1979 through 1984.

Ecological Dynamics of Tick-Borne Zoonoses
by Daniel E. Sonenshine (Editor), Thomas N. Mather (Editor)
Hardcover: 464 pages
Publisher: Oxford University Press; (June 1997)
Book Info
The ecological relationships found to exist between tick vectors and
pathogens in their zootic cycle can profoundly influence patterns of
transmission and disease for humans and domestic animals. This book
examines the ecological parameters affecting the conservation and
regulation of tick-borne zoonoses as well as the geographic and
seasonal distributions of those infections. Written by an eminent
authority on the subject, the book will be sought after by students
and researchers in ecology, invertebrate zoology, parasitology,
entomology, public health, and epidemiology.
