From Martha Barr was born in Paisley, Scotland, on 19 April,1830, the elder daughter of Robert Barr and Martha Glen. Robert and Martha set sail aboard the “Robert Benn” arriving in Melbourne on 26.1.1842, with son John and Martha. Their sister Mary died on the voyage, she was just three years of age. After a short stay in a camp on Batman’s Hill Robert obtained employment as a shepherd in the Glenelg district of western Victoria where the family lived in a hut on the banks of the Glenelg River.
