To the Editor:

The GLBT community of Chicago has a golden opportunity this year to elect two openly gay aldermen to the City Council. Once again our community has decided to splinter itself in another shameless display of self-interest. In the 49th Ward, Michael Harrington's integrity has been questioned without proof of wrongdoing, simply innuendo and hearsay.

As one of the founding Board members of the Rodde Fund in April 1977, I can assure you that I too, am most unhappy with the fact that the dream of a community center twenty-five years ago and the effort put forth to raise those original monies was lost, but let's not throw blame where it simply does not exist. The Rodde Center became an independent organization with the blessings of the Tavern Guild founders. It's board selected and purchased a building, the community and it's organizations failed to utilize and support the project because self-interests got in the way.

A building without tenants cannot pay its bills and so the building was sold and the center moved into leased space.

It was not the most enlightened decision, and with the growing need to help AIDS care organizations, the center fell by the wayside in the fund-raising crunch. There is no doubt that it was a poor choice, those in charge made decisions, and no one seemed to care then.

To insinuate that Mr. Harrington alone mismanaged the Center and it's funds is foolhardy. There were several Boards, several directors in the Rodde Center's history. Others were involved in the management of the fund and it's properties.

Why, after fifteen years, have we dusted off this piece of bad history within our community for focus? This is no better than bad bar gossip, and I've heard my share of that as well.
