5.2 - A Week in the Life of L'Abri

Some reflections on our time at L'Abri: Friday night we stayed in a tiny, 1-room
chalet, called the 'bird's nest'. Saturday we moved into Bellevue, and then went to
Farel House to look at the tape catalogue of possible topics on countless Christian
and philosophical issues, and realized for the first time that one week there would
be far from enough time. Sunday morning we were amused to see several people
knitting during the church service. Sunday afternoon we took advantage of the
clear, sunny day to hike up more of the mountain to the neighbouring town of
Villars
with a fellow student - Sarah. At the top we met another student - Mo, and all of us went to an
outdoor cafe as the temperature was so warm you could take your coat off. As a little side note: for all those of you who are fans of US's heart throb Leonardo DiCaprio, Mo, who's from Los Angeles, told us that he had personally been to a party where Leonardo was! On our way back to L'Abri Mo showed us a much shorter way - roughly half as long as we had taken to get there. Monday morning found both of us in the kitchen helping to prepare food: Becky made tortillas and salsa; Dana made buns from scratch. The afternoon was spent with Dana listening to tapes as Becky continued to tackle C.S. Lewis's Mere Christianity. Tuesday morning Dana was almost sick to her stomach, and Becky enjoyed her first visit to the chalet in which the Schaeffers first lived, and where L'Abri began. A family lives there now - the husband and wife both being L'Abri workers. Becky helped prepare lunch and clean as roughly half the students would be eating there. This was called a formal meal - the husband, Jim, would lead us all in a discussion based on a question that the students might have. He reminded Becky of a prof she had at Concord College - Gerry Ediger. Boy were there some tough questions asked at that meal! By the afternoon Dana was feeling much better, and by the evening she joined a hilarious game of Taboo which a bunch of us played. Wednesday we had our first and only meeting with a worker, Ruth, who shed some light on our many confusing questions.

The movie 'Princess Bride' entertained us in the evening. Thursday, our last full day and also a free day, gave Dana the chance to cram in all the remaining tapes she wanted to study, (all of which were played at high speed), and gave Becky the chance to visit Villars one more time and study as well.
