Of the many Gazeteers that describe New York State, Madison County, and the towns of Cazenovia, Fenner, and Nelson, Thomas F. Gordon's 1836 work, which relied heavily upon the earlier work by Horatio G. Spafford for its text, was the first to provide detailed maps of individual counties.  In these maps, which represent each individual county, Gordon shows in much detail both natural and cultural features.  Gordon's maps show the major highways of the day (many lesser routes are not shown) but, like Burr's 1829 map, the actual courses are not represented quite accurately.  The origin and destination of the roads are correct, and the course might be a general representation of curve and intersections, but they should not be used as an indicator of the actual course followed by the highways.
