| What was your first solo stand-up gig?
My first solo standup gig was at a jazz club in Atlanta. What is your worst nightmare as a comic while performing on stage? Has it happened? I was once on stage and a woman in the back of the room kept screaming, "It's my birthday." Finally, I asked her if I bought her a shot for her birthday would she shut up. She agreed. The waitress brings the shot on stage and that's when I notice the obviously drunk pregnant woman walking up to the stage to retrieve her birthday drink. It's one of those moments where all the joy is sucked from the room. At what age did you realize you were funny? Why? Tell us the story. I always thought I was funny as a child. At age six my mother came back from out of town and asked me if I missed her. I told her I did and she asked if I knew what "missed" means. I told her that it was when you threw a rock at something and missed. I knew the answer but went for the joke. Who are your comic influences? What are your comedic influences? Chris Rock, Greg Rogell, Franklin Ajay, Bob Newhart, Carlin, Marsha Warfield, and the masters, Richard Pryor and Bill Cosby. What is the worst job you have ever had? I had a gig at a ski resort in the summer. I showed up at the front desk to tell whoever booked the gig that I'm here. A man stares at me, looking quite nervous, repeating, "They didn't send a picture." So I run out to the car to get a picture of me for him. I do the show noticing that the crowd was more than a bit strange. I could not put my finger on it until I noticed that a few kids at the show had to ask permission to shake my hand. That's when I noticed the strange banners and that everyone kept staring and realized this was some sort of white supremacy group that wanted a comic to close their meeting. I later found them online on a list of hate groups. What are some of your favorite television shows? My favorite shows have been "I Spy," "Cheers," "M*A*S*H," "WKRP," "News Radio" and "The Office." I think this is the golden age of comedy movies: "Old School," Wedding Crashers," "The 40-Year-Old Virgin," "There's Something About Mary," and "Shrek." What do you hope to gain by becoming the Last Comic Standing? If I won "Last Comic Standing" it would allow me to move from small clubs to theaters, play all over the world, and turn me from a renter to an owner. Most embarrassing moment? Have you recovered? I once did a show for nudists. I could not find anywhere to look. Plus the crowd kept asking me to "take it off." It took me a few days after that to even be comfortable seeing myself naked. Give us your best "knock knock" joke. Knock knock. Who's there? A reminder to fix your doorbell! What is the worst question you have ever been asked in an interview? The worst question I have ever received in an interview was, "Do you think comics will ever tell jokes about 9/11?" I told the truth that yes, some comics at some point will start doing 9/11 jokes. I was asked this on national TV a week after 9/11; no one wanted to hear that. |
