Purpose of the Yellow Ribbon Cards:

Step 1: Educate the uses of the Yellow Ribbon Cards to the public;

These are pocket sized cards that empower and encourage teens to seek help in times of crisis. A youth gives a card to someone they trust when they are at a time of need and looking to talk, and the back of the card tells the person receiving it how to respond and what to do.

Step 2: Hand out the Yellow Ribbon Cards in our community;

This can be done through distributing them during community events and presentations, school presentations and by providing the cards free to take at stores, businesses etc.

Step 3: The card is in the Youth's hands;

It is entirely the free will of the youth to use the Yellow Ribbon card as their lifeline, when and if they feel suicidal. The card removes the need for the person to ask for help through speech, they simply have to hand the card to someone they know and trust. It is beneficial that the suicidal individual doesn't have to talk. Many times suicides are completed because the person does not know how to cry out for help, and say to another person 'I feel like killing myself'. The cards remove the awkwardness of approaching another, and offers a simple and easier way to ask for help.

Step 4: Someone is handed a Yellow Ribbon Card;

When a person is handed a Yellow Ribbon card from another who is suicidal, they should follow the steps provided at the back. "Stay with the person - you are their lifeline!....Listen, really listen. Take them seriously!.....Get, or call help immediately!" A local crisis number is printed at the back of the card as well.

Step 5: Got, or called help;

The suicidal individual will be cared for by professional crisis personalities. It is important to state that the Yellow Ribbon Suicide Program is not a crisis center, it is here to reach out and provide help for those that need it, through referring crisis numbers at the back of the cards.
