HOME: Snow and ice covered regions of the Artic Circle
LIFE SPAN: 20 to 35 years in the wild or in the zoo.
LOOKS: One of the largest bears, the males averages 1400 pounds and
the female weights about 800 pounds. The polar bear's body has adapted
to life on ice or swimming in freezing water. It has a layer of fat under
the skin and powerful legs. Wide, flat paws with fur-covered soles keep
its feet warm. The fur is thick and oily to keep the body from freezing.
Its sense of hearing and smell help it find food. Polar bears do not seem
to fear human beings.
They can run up to 25 miles per hour and can swim 6 miles per hour.
FOOD: Seals, birds, vegetation, and fish.
