I Love to Read

I Love to Read

My mom taught me how to read when I was about four. I've been in love with reading ever since.

Family legend says that when I was five years old, I was sitting on a chair in the kitchen when one of my aunts walked into the room. She asked me what I was doing and I quite simply said, "Reading." Her reply was, "You can't read!" I am told that at that point, I read an entire newspaper article to my astonished aunt.

I read my first Nancy Drew when I was eight. That was the beginning of my love for mysteries. The first time (there were only 2 times) that I had to take a day off school when I wasn't really sick, was when I stayed up after everyone else had gone to bed and read all night long. I finished the mystery that I was reading at about 4 AM. I was 9 years old. The second time was when I was 16--and the reason was the same.

I read Carrie soon after it was published, but, it was The Shining that made me a true King fan. One of the things I like about King's books is that, while good just about always triumphs over evil, the evil is still in the background, waiting to resurface. Also, the characters are very real, as are their struggles with the voice of their consciences. He is a great storyteller and makes the implausible, plausible...at least until the end of the book. :)
