In 1851, the family were living in North Walsham. John Fox had married
Harriot (Pratt?) and they had one son (aged 1 month) called Fredrick Fox.
Harriot was born in North Walsham. John's occupation is listed as 'manager
of houses' whilst Harriot was a Milliner.
By 1861, they were living in Jetty Street, with four children; Sophia (8), Charles (6) John H (2) and Herbert (11mths). No record of Fredrick in this listing? Perhaps the worst had happened. They also had two servants, Mary Johnson (46) servant and Elizabeth Chadwick (16) as nurse. John was already Postmaster by this time. By 1871, the family has grown! A very busy ten years for Mrs Fox - the children are: Sophia L (18), John H (12), Herbert (10), Alice E (8), Alfred P (7), Ambrose H (6), Edith H (4) and Lancelot R (2). Charles is now not mentioned, but at age 16 he may have been working away from home - more work to do there! In 1881, John is listed as a Widower, with just the children as listed on your website. However, the 'lodger' is Miss Harriet Buck, a visitor from Skeyton. Perhaps this is the Harriet who took over after he died and built the new post office? Ambrose, also took over as local registrar of births, deaths and marriages after John's death (according to Kellys 1900). |
