fast & bulbous, got me?

please read this carefully !!

what do you get when you want to use don van vliet's compositions as a basis for improvisation and arranging? yes, you get "fast & bulbous, the captain beefheart project". earlier this year phillip johnston got together with gary lucas with the proposal to do something with the music of captain beefheart.

jazz arranger and composer phillip johnston says: 'in much of the music I've written I see the guiding spirit of don van vliet'. gary lucas shouldn't need an introduction. he joined the magic band in 1980. He stayed with the captain for two albums, one video and one world tour. He says: 'it's like I went to beefheart university'.

a couple of months ago, a band was put together and a lot (!!) of beefheart tunes were rehearsed. i've heard their demo (including 'veteran's day poppy', 'abba zaba', 'evening bell' & 'when it blows it stacks') and all I can say is 'wow, this is absolutely great - this is beefheart jazz': why hasn't somebody else thought of this before?

try to see them. i sure will.

if i'm not mistaken their yurripian tour kicked off in italy yesterday, or today, or something like that. I only know for sure that they will be playing in brugge, belgium in a couple of days. be there !!
