George Harrison![]() Born: 25 February 1943 Died: 29 November 2001 My Personal Opinions of George Harrison George Harrison, the mystical Beatle. George was somewhat pushed out of the spotlight when the songwriting duo of Lennon-McCartney emerged. Though John and Paul sang on most of the songs, George often had an opportunity to showcase his vocal talents. In the picture above, George has a very mysterious smile. I look at that picture and often wonder what he's thinking. It appears he knows something about me I don't. George was crucial to the development of the group's music. He introduced the group to various Indian instruments, which were featured in many of compositions, the first being 1965's Norwegian Wood, on which he used the sitar. He was also the one who took the other 3 Beatles to India to learn transcendental meditation with the Maharishi. It was the growing tension between John and Paul that allowed George to get more of his songs on their later records. George was probably second only to John in his critiques of social injustices. His song "Piggies" mocks the social climbers. George's music also reflects his beliefs in transcendental meditation, peace, and love. In 1981 George became the first ex-Beatle to write a song tribute for the late John Lennon--"All Those Years Ago". It was a gesture symbolic of George's belief that the spirit can rise above whatever tarnishes real life. He did. George Harrison -- the Soul of The Beatles.
