"yeah, she's alright with me"

Many people would consider this song a sort of "filler" in the RTS album, it’s not a very long song, located toward the end, and well, it ain’t that very deep when it comes to meaning. This is basically what I consider an unfair assumption. Out of all the songs on RTS, this has got to be one of the songs with the most character. For one, it’s very basic, I just love how the slide guitar, piano, and harmonica, along with everything else they use simply blend in together like magic. Adam Duritz sings this song sounding like a wino in some drunken stupor babbling continuously about some woman…..it’s just perfect.

On it’s most reflective level, Mercury strikes me as a song about ultimate acceptance, no matter how messed up this character being described in the song is, it just goes back to the line "Yeah, but she’s all right with me", but let’s not even bother going into that. On it’s most basic level, it’s just the band having plain old fun….that’s all, and "That’s all right WITH ME".

Hearing this song is one thing, I can imagine it live, the closest thing I ever saw was on TV when they showed them recording this song in the studio, it was just amazing seeing the band work and slowly put this song together. Mercury is like the perfect "jam/hang-out" song which any band would love to play on a lazy afternoon.

MORE THOUGHTS

Mercury reminds me of the way that I can be alot. Changing so suddenly just like Mercury is definately me. I think that it is great that someone like Adam can write music that touches so may people. I know I probably sound like some kind of pathetic nut, but I'm not. Adam's words have given me the strength to carry on many times over the past few years.

Mercury happens to be one of my favorite Crows songs - sure, in some ways it's a tad simple, and the sound is definitely loose, but the harmonic rythm keeps the rather slow song moving forward, and the lyrics (and how they're sung) just make this song -- both the studio and live versions.
