recovering the satellites ----------------

recovering
the satellites Maybe because it was the name of their new album or something, I’m not sure what it was exactly that really got me so excited about this song. I guess since it provided the name for the album, it HAD to be a great song. The beginning really mislead me at first. It had the feel of a song just waiting to "jump". When Adam sang the first verse going into "we were gonna be the wildest, the wildest people they’d ever see…." I was literally bracing myself for an exploding chorus. What I got however was completely the opposite. So initially, I have to admit, I was disappointed. If there has got to be just ONE gripe(bear in mind, it’s a really LITTLE gripe….almost non-existent) I have about "August and Everything After", it has got to be the fact that it lacks faster paced songs along the vein of "Rain King" or "Murder of One". So basically, I was expecting more on RTS. And from the start, the song "Recovering the Satellites" had the makings of what I deemed as a "fast song". But well, we all know now that it really isn’t. In truth, it’s really something better than that. I guess the best way to describe this song is simply "elegant". It’s not a very "exciting" song, pace-wise, no flashy solos or catchy choruses, but it will get everybody watching in an arena on their feet at the sound of it’s first notes just like any good old "rocker". Why is that? Well, simply put, it’s the words. The fact that the song moves on at it’s moderate controlled pace makes the words easier to hear and absorb. And the words, well, they’re simply amazing. The line I mentioned above, is just one of them, it simply makes your hair rise(at least for me). My other favorite line is "We’re such crazy babies little monkey, god we’re so fucked up you and me". The power of these lines, and the whole song for that matter is that it emphasizes on the individual person. And just how different each person is from each other. We all are our own "satellites", our experiences and actions make us different and special. Sound a little mushy and "greeting cardsy" for ya? Well, I don’t know exactly what kind of people you are, but no matter what, when someone says I’m special, it does mean something to me, no matter how corny it sounds, wouldn’t anybody else be the same way? Anyway, as any true fan would know, the song is about "getting back on the ground" recollecting yourself and healing yourself after going through trials in life. It’s about surviving the worst and ultimately coming out stronger and a better person for it. It’s also about looking out for other people’s satellites, and being there for their "crash into Earth" and help them ultimately "re-launch into orbit". That is what life is all about, getting hoisted up in the air, getting shot down, and picking yourself up and moving on, growing up. You got to accept this if you really are to truly "live". Adam really hit the nail on the head when he said…"It’s a lifetime commitment". |
