My Life Story.

Well folks this is pretty much my life story so be warned! I have put this page up so the friends I have made on the NET can get to know me better, hope you like it!

My full name is Ross Gordon Kennedy. I was born in a small town called Yarram in Victoria (Australia) on June 30th 1970. I was raised with my older brother Ian by our Mum Heather who was a Dairy Farmer. We lived mostly on farms which was a great life!

I went to Lakes Entrance Primary school and then Hedley Primary School for grades 5 and 6. Form (year) 7 through to 10 was spent at Yarram High School which I hated. In the second term of Year ten Mum sent us to Saint Anne's and Gippsland Grammar School (STAGGS) in Sale (still in Victoria!) I was there for nearly 3 years, repeating Year 11 (I hated studying!).

I left STAGGS at the end of 1987 after completing Year 11 and spent the summer spraying thistles on a farm, pretty exciting stuff to say the least. But hey it was 5 bucks an hour in the hand! I left Victoria in January 1988 and went to live with 2 of my cousins in Brisbane (Queensland). I worked as a builders Labourer for a month and then did a Hospitality course for 3 weeks. That landed me a job as a waiter but it was a new Restaurant and they didn't need all the staff they employed.

So I packed my bags and headed up to Cairns in Northern Queensland and worked as a Builder's Labourer again for 6 weeks before returning home in winter. After a few weeks holiday I headed for Melbourne and worked as a waiter for a few months before heading over to New Zealand in September.

I returned home in January 1989 after backpacking around New Zealand, at one stage I had $3 in my pocket and was living in a tent! I waited tables to earn enough to get back to Australia. Mum was sure glad to see me, she hadn't heard from me for 4 months, boy did I get told!!!

I spent a week picking grapes in Mildura in 40 degree heat and another 3 weeks picking chillies in Lindenow during frosts, both times living in a tent at the local caravan park. After that I got a job as a kitchenhand at Breathtaker Ski Lodge on Mt Buller for the 1989 Ski Season so it was on with the winter woolies and off once again.

I worked there with a German Chef called Harald Fritz but everyone just called him Fritz. After the season finished I said goodbye to Fritz, thinking I would not see him again, such was not the case. After having a weeks holiday at home I headed to Adelaide in South Australia for a week and then I spent 14 days busing it around the west coast of Australia, over the Nullabour to Perth, up to Darwin and back down to Adelaide, a total distance of nearly 11,000 kilometres!

I stopped off at Ayers Rock and scored a job as a kitchenhand so I headed home, got my stuff and headed back to the Rock. I worked at the Four Seasons Hotel over Christmas and then applied for a job at a new hotel that was about to open called the Red Centre Hotel. Who should turn up but Fritz, who was the Head Chef and his wife Rhonda who was the personnel manager. She called me and Told me that I was going to work for them so I did. A month later I was indentured as an apprentice Chef 4 months short of my 20th birthday.

Fritz left shortly after that but I stayed a total of 2 years at Ayers Rock before I found out that he was working at The Ramada Grand Hotel in Adelaide and I gave him a ring. By this stage I was half way through my second year of Apprenticeship and basically sick of working at Yulara (Ayers Rock). I dropped in to visit Fritz and his family on holiday and while I was there he got me a job at the Grand.

I started work at the Grand in August 1991 and finished in December 1993 just as I qualified as a Chef. I went to work as Fritz'z second Chef at Pinnacle Valley Resort in Victoria 200 kilometres north of Melbourne. I was there for 6 months before getting a job as the Lodge Manager at Tyrol Lodge on Mount Buller. I had to cook and organise 22 Lifties and a housemaid, certainly kept me busy.!!

In September 1994 I returned to Adelaide and was offered a job as a casual Chef at the Grand (which is now the Stamford Grand) which I accepted, 5 years later I quit. That was a few weeks ago now. Basically Im sick of the 4.30 AM starts (I've been on Breakfast for most of the past 3 years). Also sick of working every public holiday, every weekend etc. This coming Christmas/New Year will be my first one off for 12 years! I live in a 2 bedroom flat in Glenelg North which I share with my brother (the absolute bane of my existance!).

Im now a poor student living on Austudy and unemployed for the first time since I left school (and loving it). I've completed over half of the Diploma of Information Technology at Panorama TAFE and I only have 9 months to go so Im concentrating on that. Cetainly I enjoy IT more than being a Chef. Of course I still love cooking but that's different from doing it for a living!

I also have had to buy a car (Yuk!), my first one since I sold the old Toyota Hi_ace 7 years ago. Luckily I managed to pick up a 1976 Datsun 120Y (bright Green) in reasonable nick so the bike will get used less but then again in this new Industry I need to get dressed in a suit so the bike just won't do. Anyway that brings you up to date as of the 10th October 1999. If you want to know more then just email me.

Cheers Ross.
