Bali, island of the gods. Island of volcanoes, beaches, rivers, temples, dancing, music and the Balinese. The influences of the mountains and religion should be understood to better understand Bali. The mountains have given life through the rich productive volcanic soil and by attracting rain to feed the streams and rivers. Because food was easy to produce, people had the time to devote to their religion, Hinduism. It is not a religion in the generally accepted western understanding, but a religion that governs all aspects of life and death. Hinduism requires constant attention. Temples need rebuilding and decorating. Ceremonies are regular and colorful, so costumes must be prepared. Food too needs to be prepared for large, extended families and for festivals. Buildings, shops, houses and vehicles need daily blessings. Even in the most built-up tourist areas you will see strong evidence of the religion.
