Dining & Drinks

Dining

jbreakfast Food is served buffet style in the main restaurant called Junkanoo and it is located just off the Recreation Room. Junkanoo is basically a very large square with glassless windows on three sides with a raised square seating area in the center. The back side is for the kitchen and is where the buffet lines are located. Even with the restaurant open to the outside it stays relatively cool due to the ocean breezes and the abundant ceiling fans. In addition there have been virtually no bugs the times we've visited although you will see birds perching and flying around - their chirping is actually a pleasant alternative to background music.

Breakfast -- 7:30AM to 10:00AM
The breakfast buffet line starts with the breads - bagels, sliced bread, toast - and then moves on to the main dishes - scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, grits, french toast. Day to day variations include things like hash browns, scrapple, potatoes, and maybe pancakes instead of french toast. There is also an Egg Chef who will make you an omelet to order. The other side of the buffet line contains the fruits - grapes, cantelope, orange slices, apples - and the pastries - doughnuts, danish, etc. For beverages, there's coffee - decaf and high-test - tea, water, and juices. As our 5 year old found out several times, the soda machines are not turned on for breakfast.

Lunch -- 12:30PM to 2:00PM
The lunch buffet line starts with the kids' favorites - hamburgers, cheeseburgers, hot dogs, french fries - and then moves on to the main dishes - soup, rice & vegetable dishes, pastas, and various meats. In the middle is another kids' favorite - pizza. The other side of the buffet line again contains the fruits and the salads - garden salad fixin's, potato salad, pasta salad, etc. For beverages, there's coffee - decaf and high-test - tea, water, and juices. And oh, the soda machines are turned on for lunch.

Snack -- 4:00PM to 6:00PM
Snacks are served in the afternoon in the Recreation Room. Available are hot dogs, hamburgers, hoagies, pizza, and fruit.

Dinner -- 7:00PM to 9:00PM (Apr-Sep) -- 6:30PM to 9:00PM (Oct-Mar)
The dinner buffet line starts with the wine and breads and then moves on to the main dishes - soup, rice & vegetable dishes, pastas, and meat - ribs, pork chops, etc. - & potatoes. In the middle are two chefs - one carving and serving a large roast or ham and a second cutting and serving fish - Mahi Mahi, baked Grouper, etc. The other side of the buffet line again contains the fruits and the salads - garden salad fixin's, potato salad, pasta salad, etc. Desserts include pastries, pies, cheesecake, etc. The beverages are the same as for lunch with the addition of the wine.

The variety and quality of the food served is excellent. It all looks, smells, and tastes good and is kept plenty warm. In fact if there's any complaint it's that the plates are often too hot to pick up - we've seen people taking them to the drink area and running water over them to cool them off before coming back and loading them up with food. There are plenty of tables in a variety of sizes and there're clearly marked smoking and non-smoking areas. The servers working the buffet line and the people setting and clearing the tables are all extremely efficient, friendly, and pleasant.

There is also a sit-down Italian restaurant call La Trattoria that specializes in pasta and pizza. It's open from 7:00PM to 9:30PM April to September and from 6:30PM to 9:30PM from October to March. It is requested that you make a reservation with Guest Services before hand. In addition to the regular dishes, steak and lobster are available but for an extra charge.

Drinks

bartenders There are three bars that serve drinks located on the property. The main bar is centrally located near the pool and the Recreation Room and is open from 10:00AM to 12:00AM (midnight). There is a beach bar located - where else - on the beach, that is open from 10:30AM to 5:00PM weather permitting. They also usually close down for a lunch break of a half hour or so. The third bar is located in the Disco and is open from 11:00PM to 1:30AM when the Disco is open.

Drinks available include a couple of brands of beer, coffee, iced tea, lemonade, water, and just about any mixed drink you could think of. The specialty, as expected, is tropical drinks. There's a large board posted listing these along with what's in each one. My personal favorite is the Goombay Smash:

Goombay Smash
1 part Light Rum
1 part Dark Rum
1 part Coconut Rum
4 parts sweetened Pineapple Juice

Some other good ones include the Bahama Mama, the Yellow Bird, and the Bahama Smile. Also, for the kids, the bartenders will gladly make any of these drinks without the alcohol. The drinks are served in plastic cups so you can carry them out wherever you want like to the pool, the beach, dinner, or even back to your room. The bartenders do a great job and are extremely friendly.
