Bahamas-On-Line     Club Viva Fortuna

Dec 27 21:22:59 2000 by Kristina
I'm going on vacation this May-June to the Grand Bahamas Island as part of a Florida/Bahamas package. I 've heard the Island Palm Resort isn't all that good and we have the chance to upgrade to the Club Viva Fortuna. I was wondering if anyone had any information on that particular resort? Is it a nice resort or should we try upgrading to a different resort?
If anyone can help me, it be appreciated.
You can email me directly at: knicholas@sjmercury.com
Thanks,
Kristina

Hi Kristina,
if you have been reading the Bahamas message boards, you'll note that the nicest property on Grand Bahama Island is Our Lucaya -- www.ourlucaya.com
Check out the Grand Bahama board -- www.grand-bahama.com for postings specifically for Grand Bahama Island.
If you scroll down this board or look through the archives, you'll probably find some postings dealing with Our Lucaya as well as Club Fortuna.
You also might want to try this board:
www.bahamas-mon.com -- click on travel forum and then scroll down to Freeport.
If you aren't in a rush, feel free to email me and I can send you info. on both Club Fortuna as well as Our Lucaya.
Club Fortuna is good value for your money, the rooms are nothing fancy, but the all inclusive is a good deal. The only downside is that there is no public bus stop so you would have to depend on taxis or car rental which can be expensive. Club Fortuna is a bit secluded, not near any restaurants or shopping or nightlife. Club Fortuna has lots of fun activities, sports right there, and the beach is nice too.
Our Lucaya is newer, and ideally located right on Lucaya Beach and across the street from Port Lucaya Marketplace where there are several restaurants, open air bars, shops, a small straw market and free entertainment at night in the main square. Our Lucaya also provides a FREE shuttle for hotel guests to go to the downtown Casino at Bahamia.
Have a great vacation, which ever place you decide to stay.
best regards
Carrie

My wife and I were there about five years ago and we had a great time. Carrie is correct in the fact that the rooms are nothing fancy. But who goes to the Bahamas to sit in a room? If you like to relax and enjoy miles of endless sandy beach, than this is the place for you. The staff was extremely friendly from the time we arrived to the time we left. Every night they would put on a stage show for your enjoyment or you can go to the lounge where they had dancing and musical entertainment. But if you like the nightlife and casinos than Lucaya is only about 10 minutes away by cab.
I hope you enjoy your vacation as much as we did.
PS: Even the cabies are friendly.

I am traveling in Jan '01 with my family - can anyone recommend reasonable hotel accomodations (other than the lucayan) w/children who are ages 12,16,18. Basically, clean rooms and a beautiful beach.

Hi Darlene,
There's basically only three 'all-inclusives' on Grand Bahama Island. The newest is the recent addition of 'all-inclusiveness' at the Lucayan, but you ruled that one out. Number two would be the 'Pizzaz' package at the Bahamia, but it's currently under major renovations and it's nowhere near the beach. Finally, (and the best in my admittedly biased opinion) there's Club Fortuna, located on 26 acres including a quarter mile of absolutely beautiful beach. It's also great for familys with kids as our 14 and 6 year olds just love the place. We've collected pictures and info from our stays there and have posted all at the website listed below. Check it out.

Bahamas-mon     Lucayan vs. Club Fortuna?

December 26, 2000 at 12:52:58 by Josh, jprosenb@ucsd.edu
Hi,
I am considering booking a trip with 11th Hour Vacations. (Any reviews?) I am leaving from the Washington DC area and they have 3 and 4 day packages that seem to be a good deal (About $500 incl. air). It seemed that the Lucayan and Club Fortuna seemed like the best bets. Any advice / comparison? I hope to go early in Jan. I understand that there are still renovations going on... Any comments would be most appreciated. Thanks.
Feel free to email me directly.

Hi,
I would go for Our Lucaya (www.ourlucaya.com)...probably the nicest property on the island and ideally located right across the street from Port Lucaya Marketplace.
Club Fortuna has a good reputation too...but you will need to depend on car rental or taxis since there is no public bus stop nearby.
Good luck. Have a great trip whatever you decide on.
best regards

We are going to the Reef Village for a week Jan. 21 - it is full according to our agent. We were also looking at Club Fortuna at first but our agent convinced us to go to the Reef Village - newer, more variety and the kids club. However, she had been to the Club Fortuna and said that it was very nice -older rooms but very clean and a beautiful beach. Sounds like a good choice. Hope the weather gets warmer there.

Hi Vicki,
Our family regularly stays at Club Fortuna and we've taken our pictures and stuff and set up a website with lots of info about the place. Check out the URL below.
Also, while having nothing to do with the resort itself, you probably should scan these boards for info on trips that people 'win'. With some of these, you really haven't won much but a bunch of hidden costs in the form of 'port fees', 'hotel taxes', 'upgrades', etc.

Geographia     Please help with complimentary weddings

We want to stay at an all inclusive resort we are trying to decide between the Club Fortuna or Lucayan but we are not sure if they offer complimentary weddings if we honeymoon there?

12/12/00 8:55:01 PM by Joe, joekusterer@yahoo.com
Hi Sam,
For information on Club Viva Fortuna, check out our family website listed at the bottom of this post. In all our time at Club Viva Fortuna, I've never seen anything about 'complimentary' weddings. They do have weddings there, but I've never seen anything about them being complimentary if you book your honeymoon there. I guess you could contact them and ask, though.
As for Our Lucaya, they've only just this month instituted their 'all-inclusive' (with the openings of Phases II & III) so I really don't know anything about whether they offer 'complimentary' weddings either.
If you want any more info on Club Fortuna, again, check out our website below and/or feel free to email.

Bahamas-mon     Questions about club viva and other stuff

December 12, 2000 at 12:29:25 by Karin (Kweir@herschel-adams.com)
My husband, 12yr. old son, and I are going to the Bahamas on Jan.6th for a week. First of all, I would like to know what is the average temperature in January? We want to swim in the ocean (and pool) and also go snorkeling. Also, are there places to karaoke and will my son be welcome in these places? Is the Bahamia within walking distance from Club Viva Fortuna? Finally, I have been reading absolute horror stories about Club Viva Fortuna and it's making me a bit paranoid....could someone who has recently stayed there post something and reassure me? Thanks for all you help!!!!!

Hi Karin,
Joe who posts regularly on this board, stays at Club Fortuna, with his family. He'll probably see your posting and will answer you. He has his own website too.
Feel free to email me directly at: carriek5@hotmail.com and I can send you some info. too. Just be patient with me since I have lots of emails to answer and can sometimes take quite awhile before answering but I do eventually.

Hi, our most recent stay at Club Fortuna was this past June/July. We'll be returning for two weeks this coming summer. Every time we've been there it's been great. I'm the Joe to whom Carrie refers and we've taken the pictures from our familys' stays there and created the "Unofficial Club Viva Fortuna Website", the URL for which is listed at the bottom of this post. We've seen the 'horror stories' too and I'm not really sure where they come from. Usually whenever you see one of these, if you check some of the other boards, there's messages from people who stayed there at the same time and just rave about how great a time they had. In fact, on our website, we've collected every post we could find from every Bahamas message board that referenced Club Fortuna in any way - good, bad, or indifferent. They're under the 'Forums/Chat' portion of the website. Read through all of them and you'll see that they run vastly toward positive comments.
If you've got any questions or comments, feel free to email.

Bahamas.com     Club Viva Fortuna- just returning!

I just wanted to set the record straight! We were at Club Fortuna Dec. 2-9. The resort was heaven. The rooms are not the Hilton suites but, they are clean and comfortable. Someone said thier toilet backed up. Well that could happen anywhere if you put to much paper in it. The beach is beautifull and you can go snorkeling right there. You do have to take a cab wherever you want to go but that is so much better than being with all the crowds. The staff was GREAT!!The bartenders where the best especially Kir. I would go back again and again and this is coming from a seasoned traveler that has been to many resorts. If you want a more laid back vacation with clean and comfortable accomadations and a very friendly, attentive staff on a beautifull beach, do yourself a favor and go there. I know I will again!

Karolann,
Your report is consistent with the overwhelming number of postive reports from people who visited Club Fortuna. There seem to be a small number of very persistent people (person maybe?) who insist on denigrating that resort. While I wholeheartedly agree with people including both good and bad news in their trip reports, it is pretty easy to spot someone reporting erroneous information or flat-out lying. I suspect that's what these bad Club Fortuna reports are since they are extremely negative and make it sound like Fortuna is a dump. It's not. While we haven't stayed there, we've been travelling to GBI for 16 years and have never heard anyone knock it. We also visited it twice to get a look for ourselves and were treated well by a friendly, professional, mostly European staff.
Danny
