Hi
I am planning a trip in June. I am trying to find out which resort is my best option; Island Sea or Club Fortuna? Any suggestions or advice is greatly appreciated!
Thanks

Dear Naomi,
It really depends on what you're looking for. Island Seas is certainly the fancier resort and it's in a little better location and on a beautiful beach. It's about a 5 minute ride to Port Lucaya and they do have full kitchens in the units. They have a wonderful swim up pool bar and a gorgeous jacuzzi. This is a pretty classy place!!!
Club Fortuna is a little quieter and they do have that all-inclusive plan that is great!!! They have lots of activities on site including a disco, theatre shows, kids club, little sailboats etc.It is more out of the way than Island Seas and there are no public buses that go out there but there is so much to do onsite that you don't have to leave very often. Also, most tour companies do offer free transportation with tours so that helps out a lot.
I do live on the island so if you need any more info just let me know. I'd be happy to help.

Bahamas-On-Line     Club Viva Fortuna

Hi there! I'm becoming abit concerned about what Club Viva Futuna is exactly like. I've visited Joes web site and I'm very impressed with what it had to say. But, I've read very negative comments aswell. Perhaps these people are just too 'picky'and instead of looking at the positive things are just 'looking' for the negative. I'm going on honeymoon there on the 4th September this year, for 2 weeks. Is there anyone else out there who has been on honeymoon there, with some info on how they found it? And, is there anyone else who will be 'honeymooning' at this time?

Apr 29 15:17:24 2001 by Carrie
Hi Sam,
I guess you'll always read both positive and negative comments on places. Five people can go to the same place and see it through different eyes. I have heard more positive than negative comments about Club Viva Fortuna. Just don't expect anything posh or massages on the beach or drinks being served on the beach and you'll be fine.
Feel free to email me and I can send you some info. on Club Fortuna, general information on Grand Bahama Island, excursions/activities (some with prices) and general tips to make your honeymoon more enjoyable. The all-inclusive Club Fortuna has a nice beach...and activities all day long. It is not on the public bus route, so if you want to venture out, you might have to depend on taxis or car rental. But you'll probably want to stay on the property most of the time anyway...and if you do some excursions, there is usually free transportation to and from the property...so that's good too.
If you want a bit more posh, you might consider staying at Our Lucaya but it would probably be more expensive. Our Lucaya is probably one of the nicest properties on the island and has a great location, on the beach and just across the street from Port Lucaya Marketplace.
Congratulations on your upcoming wedding. I hope that you and your bride to be will have a great honeymoon on Grand Bahama Island.
best regards,
Carrie

Club Fortuna is an older resort, but is nice. The problem with some people is that when they go to a Caribbean Island, they expect paradise. No resort can be everything to to everyone. club fortuna is an all inclusive with a nice beach and a lot of activities. If you would prefer a more private place closer to Lucaya where all the activites are, my wife and I have a studio condo on Lucayan Bay. It is beautifully decorated. It rents for much less than a hotel. To see pictures, visit www.rentmycondo.com/583.shtml. If you have questions, E-mail me at calm@lilly.com. There are pros and cons to both. We are on the bay, have a panoramic view of the ocean, but are not right on the beach and you would have to cook in the condo or go out. We are close to the ocean, but have to walk around the bay to get to the beach. The condo unit has a pool. It is about 15 minutes walk or 3 minutes by bus. At the all-inclusive, you will pay more, but will be right on the beach and have all your meals provided.

Sam,
I wouldn't sweat it. The thing about these posts is you don't know who is writing them. You can look back in the archives for a review I posted in late March. I had a great time, but with different weather, companions, expectations, or whatever, it could have been different. Best thing is try to find someone you know, who knows you, to give you advice. For all you know, I work for Viva!
Good luck!

I can assure you that Club Viva is a very nice and fun resort for honeymooners. I have been there 4 times this year alone and yes the Website your friends are reffering to is owned by the same group. I know the owners personally. It is a top notch run resort with all amenities and when you leave you will be sad, just as we were. You meet some of the nicest people you will ever meet in you life. After I left the first time, I missed the staff so much I flew back over in 2 weeks. The people running this resort as well as the guests become life long friends with you. It is amazing! The activities are everyhour on the hour and the nightly shows are excellent. They even have a disco run by the club on the property and a Colubian Emeralds store right on the property. After all if RCI timeshares has a vested interest in the company it obviously is NOT too shabby! Also I am personal friends with the photographer there and I know he does really good work!! He works well with his clientel and really gives them first class service! If you need help with arrangements don't hesitate to e-mail EXPRESSTRAVEL@netscape.net I will get everything set up for you. I am traveling back to Viva in July for a weekend, so if you need assistance let me know.

Sam-
I completely enjoyed my recent four day trip to Fortuna. A search of the archives or Joe's sight should yield my review. Speaking only for myself, however, I would find two weeks a long time to stay there. I would plan to do a few of the side trips, maybe a couple days of golf and or fishing. I would also plan a couple of nights out away from the buffet. Good Luck.

April 26, 2001 at 10:25:52 by Nancy (123@hotmail.com)
We just got back from Club Viva where we stayed for 1 week. The beach was fabulous but it would have been nice to have someone offer drinks or massages while sunbathing. Also, the food was good quality and Bahamian staff were friendly.
My complaints? The juice machines were shut off immediately after each meal. When they were on - they never worked. I nurse my baby and depend on non- carbonated beverages and this was very frustrating. Also, their sense of timing was crazy. Breakfast would end at 10:00am and by 10:00am - the gate was closed! After arriving from a late flight the previous night with a baby, we wanted to sleep-in alittle but when we arrived for breakfast at 9:57am - they were closed. They wouldn't make any acceptions. So, we had to wait until 12:30 for lunch. There are not enough snacks between meals except some mini muffins, gooey pizza and hotdogs. The same thing every day. People esp. kids seemed to be hungry all the time as they had to wait for lunch or dinner. Hence, food would end quickly and they wouldn't replenish certain things. We found staff to be friendly except for the Italians who worked there who never said hello. The resort is Italian run so they really believe in timing. The Bahamian workers complained about this as well as this is not the "Island Way". In fact, there was pasta at every meal. I did not mind this as I love pasta - but you figure the sole restaurant on the premises would be anything but Italian! A Chinese food restaurant would have been nice as a change. We heard a complaint from a friend of ours whose 9 year old daughter was sworn to by a French Canadian blonde female worker by the pool. The worker is very rude and told her to F-You after she told her a knock knock joke. Other complaints?
-not enough towels. In fact, the maid knocks on your door at 8:00am to see if you have dirty towels despite having a "do not disturb" sign on door.
-some rooms did not have water after 11:00pm and our toilet clogged.
-too conservative! There could have been dancing on beach, junkaroo band, etc. A little more lively please!
-far walk from certain rooms to the pool or dining room. You figured they knew we had a small baby - why put us in a room so far away!
-check-out time was 11:00am but our flight did not depart until 10:00pm. They would not offer us a room so we can rest and put the baby to sleep. We spoke with an Italian manager who had a do not care attitude. He told us to put the baby to sleep in the gym (which is non-air conditioned)!
-my husband had his feet on the wooden tables at the pool bar and he was told by a cleaner that he should not put his feet on table. The table is very old and run down looking.
-children's activites could have been better supervised. I saw very small children left alone with the open paint containers. We had a good time but heard a lot of complaints. We really enjoyed the beach but if this resort was Bahamian run - it would be a lot better!

April 26, 2001 at 17:51:12 by Lisa (Richli57@home.com)
Just returned from Fortuna 4/24, and I agree with Nancy on her posting. The food and drink situation was ridiculous. You could only be hungry and thirsty during those hours that the Junkanoo was open. The towel situation was outrageous that your only allowed 1 beach towel for the whole day and if you lose your card a 10.00 fee. They say all inclusive but your overlooked by the bartenders (most of them) if your a non-tipping customer. The front desk was totally rude. The staff that works the restaurant is not very fast or helpfull ( many times had to get or wait a long time for silverware. The rooms are the worst very old and run down, the lounge furniture (indoors) was wood and most of it was either broken, sandy or dirty. The grounds were kept in fair condition, but trash was never picked up from any of the grounds people or staff. I actually left a coffee cup on a table and it was there All day and night. The beach itself is nice but alot of litter on the beach and never picked up , a machine would just roll over the cups etc. every night. The towel shack closed at 6:00 pm for the pool which i think is a litle early since your on vacation.
The multi cultural staff was friendly but at times some were very inappropriate with little kids around. It is a lovely area but I feel that the manangement is letting it get too run down. Overall we had a good time, we met alot of nice vactioners who had alot worse things happen to them than us, but it could be a great resort if only a little more effort was put into it. The kids club was ok, not for little ones but my daughter who is 7 had fun.
One more thing smoking is allowed in every area of the restaurant, any many mornings had to walk through smoke or sit near someone who was smoking, evenings also.

I have never posted a message before but had to respond to the last couple of messages re Club Viva Fortuna. We were there for four days recently. Two couples and six children, ages 6 - 16. We had a great time. We have stayed at much fancier places, but our children unanimously declared that it was the most fun they had ever had. It wasn't luxurious, but we weren't expecting anything like that. I saw several staff people picking up trash and rather than criticizing the staff for the amount of trash, the criticism should be aimed at the guests who think that just because they're on vacation they don't have to use the trash cans. We would definitely consider a return visit.

May 11, 2001 at 13:19:00 by Belynda Bubel (EXPRESSTRAVELS@netscape.net)
We will therefore respond to each point raised by the client.
1) A massuese can be booked at our Guest Service desk
2) It is only practical to shut off the juice machines in the restuarant after each meal serving, so that we may prepare for another meal setting. Our all-inclusive service is not interrupted as juice and all other beverages can be obtained from our Pool Bar from 10:00am-12:00 midnight
3) Breakfast is served from 7:00am-10:30am and gates are closed a 10:30am and not 10:00am
4) Additionally, in the event our guests are unable to meet breakfast closing deadline, assorted pastries, coffee, tea and jucies can be obtained by the pool bar
5) Our menu is based on a 14 day roll over system offering different dishes daily. Everyone should know our Resort has an Italian flare and pasta is served daily including other dishes so there is a variety
6) Snacks are served from 10:00am-12:00pm and 4:00pm-6:00pm by the pool daily
7) Our Excursion representative is trained to be courteous and helpful towards our guests at all times. Filing a complaint while in our province would have satisfied us by giving us the opportunity to deal with the complaint in an expedient manner. We do not take kindly to ill-mannered individuals at the Resort as thy are trained to serve as our Ambassadors and reflects on not just the resort, but the island in general
8) It is our custom to equip each room with towels for two, however some guests feel this is inadequate
9) We have an extensive selection of land and water sports/activities Meringue and international dance lessons are offered by the pool daily as the surface is more level and appropriate for dancing as opposed to the beach.
10) We generally do not have a problem with running water and can only assume some repairs were being undertaken during this time to cause a water flow disruption.
11) Our Resort is not equipped with a hospitality room, but rather guests can either ask for late check out or another room, availability permitting
12) Guest are not permitted to place their filthy feet on the furniture as it is for the use of all guests. There are lounge chairs for this purpose.
13) Our kid's program is very well organized and supervised and never in our short history have we experienced any mishaps in terms of caring for our little guests.
We trust our response will shed a fuller understanding of our operation set-up and insist that all guests take the time out to attend a short briefing to ensure they have a worry-free true all-inclusive vacation experience

WE are thinking of taking a family vacation at club viva fortuna a week in June. I have 2 children 5 and 7 and was wondering about what the kids club was like, ex activities and hrs.
Any info would be helpful. Thanks

The Viva Kid's Club is for kids age 4 to 12 Basically it's a morning and an afternoon session (about 3 hours each) where there's supervised activities for the kids. You dump them off and pick them up three hours later. They have them doing all sorts of activities like swimming and water polo in the pool, bocce ball and volley ball on the beach, arts and crafts, and all sorts of other things. It's also not a formal commitment, you just sign them up at the first session and then they can show up for as many or as few of the sessions as is convenient.

My family is thinking of going to Club Fortuna the first week of November. How warm will the water be? Also, does anyone know what ages the kids club covers? Is there babysitting available in addition to the kids club - my kids will be 8 months and 2 1/2 yrs. My husband and I are both certified to dive. Does anyone know how much it costs for a one-tank or a two tank dive without the lessons?

Hi Chris,
I hope you will enjoy your upcoming stay at the all inclusive Club Viva Fortuna. Joe, who often posts on the message boards, is an excellent source of information since he and his family usually vacation there. I'm sure he'll see your posting and will answer you. In the meantime, you might want to check his website:
http://www.oocities.org/clubfortuna
Please note that Club Viva Fortuna has mini-refrigerators for the hotel rooms, but you must request them. There is a charge of about $5.00 per day, and a limited number of fridges available so keep this in mind.
Bring those insulated thermal sports mug/bottles with you and you can walk around with them. Most drinks at bars are served in 6 oz. plastic cups. The thermal mugs are handy and you can walk around with your drink, no one should bother you.
For children, the "Club Fortuna Beach Kids' Fun Club", is designed for children from 4-12 years old so your children are too young. Sports, games, lessons, activities, under the supervision of trained staff. Available from 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. and 3-6 p.m. There's a children's playground.
Joe would be able to tell you more about the kids' club since I'm sure his children attend. As well, he could probably tell you about babysitting services and prices of diving.
Best regards
Carrie

Does anyone have more information on the different dive sites around the Grand Bahama. Any pictures of the Theo's Wreck or any of the reefs / walls?
Also, can anybody comment on the Club Viva Fortuna dive shop and their dive sites and rates.
Any info is greatly appreciated,

Carribean Divers is a good dive shop. They pick you up. I have heard that Pygmy Caves is an excellent dive.

April 16, 2001 at 14:38:56 by Janice (lilb71@hotmail.com)
Dear Tomas,
I have heard ok reviews about the dive operation at Club Fortuna. However, everyone seems to just love Caribbean Divers. They are a nice small operation that really gives personal service. They will also offer free transportation. Prices will really depend on how many dives and the types of dives that you do. You can email Caribbean divers for more information at caribdiv@grouper.batelnet.bs

Hi Tomas-
I've received a couple of emails from people who've used the dive facilities at Club Fortuna, here's the comments...
"Yes they are very good and offer two dive trips each day, a two tank dive in the AM and a one tank dive in the PM..Also will arrange special dives(night and shark dives)..I just got back and spent several days with these folks and they are first class and have everything on premises of resort..They are associated with PADI and follow strict rules for diving..Classes are available for certification..The staff is multi-national from Europe, S. America, America, and New Zealand." - Frank, October 2000
"Well, that's all I can think of to update, except to please keep telling people that the dive shop is top-notch! We have been to others in other countries and would have to say this is one of, if not, the best as far as equipment, and instruction!" - Becky and Joe, March 2001
Our oldest son also used them this past summer and we thought they were a pretty excellent operation ourselves. As far as the rates and such, if you go to the following url http://www.oocities.org/clubfortuna/sports/index.html , I've scanned in their brochure and I think it might have rates. If not, email me because I know I've got scans of their price sheets from last summer.

I'm going to Club Fortuna in May for my Honeymoon.
I know its not got the best rooms in the world, but bloody hell we want to be out in the sun!! (Rains a bit in London..)
Anyway, I'm a UK diver and have never dived in warm water. Over here we dive with Drysuits, in quite cold water (ABout 4 Degrees in winter) I have 9 years experience and instructor qualifications with the BSAC (British Sub-Aqua club)
The only US qualificatrions I have are IANTD Advanced Nitrox and TDI Tri-mix. Does anyone know if they will except british qualifications?
Also I want to take my BCD and regs over, only wishing to hire cylinder and weight. DO they do discounts for this?
What's the diving like over there? I only really dive wrecks in the UK, and would like to know if there are many out there. Please tell me there is more than a couple of Tug boats sunk for divers.
Cheers.
Matt

April 21, 2001 at 02:44:33 by Elissa (ivn6@aol.com)
Hi Matt,
I'm a California cold water diver, though not as cold as what you describe. i've been to Freeport many times, about 80 dives. My favorite dive operation is Xanadu dive shop. We know the staff there and really enjoy ourselves. They have east and west end dive trips, charters and blue holes too.
My favorite dive site is pygmy caves (The coral formations are great and there is an abundance of fish, plus some swim through coral tunnels) and invertebrates and theos wreck. Theos wreck is a 230 ft plus freighter that is at about 108 ft, If I remember correctly it is resting on its starboard side. There are a few other smaller tugs but not as cool as theos. If you can get a hold of "The Caribbean Dive Guide" by Kurt Amsler, (available at amazon.com), there are some good descriptions of the popular dive sites and the shark diving adventure. The book costs about $25.00 US. It also has a fish identification chart in the back that is several pages long and in color.
Most people wear a dive skin 1-3 mm to protect themselves from coral scapes, not so much for the cold. Though last year we found a 42 degree F freshwater halocline/thermocline at one of the dive sites.
My favoite experience has to be the shark dives put on by Xanadu. If you visit the www.divexanadu.com website you will see some shark pictures that we took on our last shark dive. There were about 30 sharks, it was quite awesome.
I've been to all of the most common sites and can't say that there is one that I don't like. Even during Hurricaine Irene a few years back we were in the water 3-4 times a day.
By the way you should have no problem with British Certification.
Words of caution:
Make sure you bring extra batteries etc. for your computer and gear. The Bahamas is very expensive and likely will not have what you need. If you are prone to bites by insects do bring some repellant.
regarding tanks and weights, they are usually included in the cost of the dive. You shouldn't have to pay anything additional.
Please don't forget your sunscreen!
I hope you have a great time and congratulations!
If you want more specific info let me know, you can email me at ivn6@aol.com

To all that have e-mailed me and replied: Thanks!! I'll make sure I bring my box of spares on the honeymoon. (I can see my wife to be getting fed up with me.... this holiday has all teh makings of a dive expedition!)
On a slightly different note, in all the web pages I've seen on diving in the Bahamas, no dives seem to be over 100' (30M.) in the UK we regularly dive from 130-170' (40-50M), and conduct planned decompression dives. (Usually with Nitrox as a decompression gas)
I can see no mention of this type of diving, so am I correct is assuming that most dives are limited to 100'? I also saw very few shops talking about twinsets or Stage cylinders. (Personally I wouldn't want to go past 100' without two cylinders)
Can anyone shed some light on this?
Cheers,
Matt

Hi :-)
I've been trying to find out some info on this resort. The saying is that you get what you pay for. This resort is so inexpensive that I'm afraid to ask what's wrong with it.
Many people have said that it's in a great location and that for what you pay, it's great. But I need to read that from more than one or two people.
This is our first vacation alone without our daughter, and we want it to be a nice one.
Thanks in advance.

Bahamas-mon     Viva fortuna/ other inclusives??

April 10, 2001 at 10:22:11 by Crystal (bgugfan@yahoo.com)
After reading a lot on here about Fortuna, I am a little hesitant. Is it really THAT bad?? Are there any other all inclusive offerings on the island? Does Bahamia still offer the Pizazz package? Also, what is the weather like in early September? Any info is greatly appreciated.

April 10, 2001 at 15:05:19 by CAL (calm@lilly.com)
There some other all-inclusives on Grand Bahama Island. The Bahamai(Princess) still has all-inclusive and the Our Lucaya has all-inclusive. I have heard good and bad about both. I have visited Club Fortuna, but have never stayed there. It looked very nice, but I have read both good and bad reviews. The weather in September is usually hot and humid. The water should be very warm. We were there in September last year, and it was nice. The only possible problem is that September/October is still in the hurricaner season. The weather could be absolutely georgeous or you could have a storm. Is thera particular reason you wanted all-inclusive. also, have you ever considered renting a condo. They are more private and cheaper than the hotels. My wife and I have a studio condo at Port Lucaya that we rent some. We did it because we were tired of hotel accomodations. If you want to see pictures, visit www.rentmycondo.com/583.shtml. If you want more info, E-mail me at calm@lilly.com

Dear Crystal,
Club Fortuna is a nice resort as it is a good all-inclusive. Not a fancy place but there's lots to do there, including a dive operation, disco, theatre shows and nightly entertainment. There is also non-motorized watersports on the beach and a wonderful kids camp. They have good food and the staff is friendly. It's on a beautiful beach and it is out of the way and quiet. There are no bus routes that go to this out of the way resort but cabs are available. Also, most tour companies do offer free tranportation and this helps a lot.
The Bahamia is still offering it's Pizazz package. Problem here is that since they don't have all of the ammenities of Club Fortuna you will probably end up spending a lot of time in Port Lucaya. That's where the shopping and nightlife is on the island. It is kind of a pain to keep going back to the resort just to eat!!!
You could also consider the All-inclusive at Our Lucaya. It is not a total all- inclusive offer for the entire property but it does cover the Reef Village part of the resort. I heard a great review of this just last night from a tourist although there have been good and bad reviews about this also.
I do live on the island and if you have any further questions please don't hesitate to email me at lilb71@hotmail.com
By the way, September is peak hurricane season but if there are no hurricanes around the weather will be in the high 80's and humid.

Dear Mike,
Club Fortuna is a nice resort on a beautiful beach. It is all-inclusive and they have so many activities you will be sure to be kept busy. They have a dive operation, non-motorized watersports, disco, kids camp, theatre shows and lots of nighttime entertainment. It is lovely and secluded...away from everyone else. It is out of the way a little but you will have your car for three days and most tour operators do offer free transportation with tours which helps out a lot.
For a 3 day car rental I recommend KSR car rental. Email address for them is sgraham@batelnet.bs They will pick you up right at the airport with your car. They also give you a little discount on the car rental if you book online.
I do live on the island and if you have any more questions at all, I'd be happy to answer them. Just email me at lilb71@hotmail.com

Just came back from Club Fortuna last week. Everyone was very accommodating, helpful, and pleasant. The food was plentiful at the buffet. The Italian Restaurant had pasta dishes. It was a nice change and a bit fancier than the dining hall. Some suggestions: bring a thermal mug if you want to bring lemonade, ice tea, water, etc. to the beach. The drinks in the 8 oz plastic cups get warm very fast. Also, bring some $1 dollar bills. Although tipping is included, we tipped bartenders, the waiter at the restaurant, etc. The front desk will only change a few at a time. Also, there is snorkeling about 25 feet in front of the beach. I did not snorkel, but many others did and they said there was plenty to see! If you need any other info, please email me.

Does anyone know of a good, relatively cheap all-inclusive resort on Grand Bahamas Island for college guys in a group of 7??

Dear Sam,
The only two all-inclusives on the island are Club Viva Fortuna and Our Lucaya. Club Fortuna is definitely the cheapest. If you need any more info about these resorts or about the island in general, you can email me directly. I do live on the island and will do my best to help you.
