PBA, BAP talks slated?
GAB chair wants POC, PSC heads to mediate Games and
Amusements Board chair Dominador Cepeda yesterday said he
will call a meeting among top sports leaders to discuss the
possibility of fielding professional players in the Asian Basketball
Confederation championships this year.
Cepeda said he will ask Philippine Sports Commission chair
Philip Ella Juico and Philippine Olympic Committee president
Cristy Ramos-Jalasco to help him broker a meeting with the top
basketball officials.
Basketball Association of the Philippines chairman Gonzalo
"Lito" Puyat has been knocking the doors of the Philippine
Basketball Association to allow its pros to play for the ABC
slated in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia in September.
But PBA Commissioner Jun Bernardino maintained that the pro
league's commitment with BAP is only for the Asian Games
participation. ABC men's, held every four years, is the qualifying
for the Olympics.
"I will ask the contributions of the PSC and the POC regarding
the matter and maybe we can call the BAP, PBA and everybody
involved to sit down and talk things over," said Cepeda during
the PSA Forum at the Holiday Inn-Manila Pavilion.
According to Cepeda, Puyat even proposed a longer training
period of the professionals for the RP squad to enable the team
to develop cohesion and teammork.
However, PBA owners may not agree with it since it would
mean losing their key players for a long time. Cepeda said the
PBA is also worried the Philippines may only suffer humiliating
defeats if ever the country qualifies for the Sydney 2000 Games.
Powered by the PBA all-stars, the Philippines wound up second
to China in the 1990 Asian Games in Beijing, while a reinforced
San Miguel Beer team placed a far fourth place in 1994
Hiroshima Asiad.
The top two finishers in the ABC men's will represent the region
in the Sydney Olympics.
