As my screen name might give away, ELP is my favorite band of all time. Formed in 1970 as a supergroup from English rock bands the Nice, King Crimson and Atomic Rooster, Keith Emerson, Greg Lake and Carl Palmer, respectively, were one of the pioneering groups in the new genre that is now referred to as progressive rock. There are many things that makes progressive rock different from the rest of classic rock. First of all, musicianship is paramount. Emerson is still known as one of the best keyboard players from the past 50 years, and Palmer was no slouch on the drums, either. Also, the songs focus more on instrumental showmanship, conplex themes, constant changes in both time and key signiture, as well as an average length of 10 minutes per song. I would go into more detail, but it's more of a listening experience than a basic definition.
