During 1940-41 Porsche designed a small amphibious car
intended to replace the large number of motorcycle combinations used by
the German motorized units. In accordance with the German standardization
requirements the Schwimmwagen was designed to make maximum use of Volkswagen
Typ 82 Kübelwagen parts. But the Schwimmwagen was smaller so that
it could be used in airborne operations. In all 14625 was produced by Volkswagen
from mid 1942 until allied bombing hampered the production in 1944.
The engine was mounted at the back which was a big advantage when the car went into the water. The crankshaft ended in a dog-clutch that drove the propeller through a chain drive. The suspension was located outside the hull, the only openings being. for each drive shaft. The body was made of pressed steel and the openings was sealed by bellow rubber seals. The Schwimmwagen was suitable for use in calm water, where steering was by means of the front wheels. Besides the usual 4 forward and 1 reverse gear it had a special low cross-country gear. The four wheel drive could be disengaged when not needed. It is also possible to build it in black and light grey. Except for two of the inverted slopes at the front it can also be built in tan. Most of these vehicles left the Wolfsburg factory in a sand color over which a camouflage pattern suited to local conditions was applied at field workshops. But as I decided to use the single piece vehicle body it would be impossible to make a realistic camouflage scheme. Notice that this model is larger in scale than my other creations. |

The original...
The transverse exhaust silencer just behind the crew compartment discharged at both sides. The rod on top was used to lover and raise the propeller. |

...and the model
When you compare the two you can see a number of differences. The most noticeable is that the Schwimmwagen had 4 seats, whereas the model only has room for 2 persons. I think that it's very hard to cram 4 minifigs into a reasonably looking model. Another difference is the lack of shovels and oars. And the front of the Schwimmwagen has a slight slope that is impossible to recreate with Lego. |

with the propeller in traveling position. The propeller actually moves down to connect to the black dot (1x1 round plate) at the rear of the car. |

Front view
I made the bow this way because the Schwimmwagen had the front suspension outside the hull. and close up of the propeller in swimming position Notice the small rear light. The shovel is stowed incorrectly but I thought that it fitted the space nicely. |
